Wow

So I was just as surprised as the next guy when I woke up this morning. Cause, well, y'all outta know by know. But if you don't: The School Choice plan was put on the backburner last night. And not even left to simmer.

Seems to me the decision sparks more questions than it answers, but I'm sure some of the regular posters here would rather have the new problems than the old.

The two biggest things I see are: How are folks gonna feel about redistricting? And what happens to the kids who started at an out-of-neighborhood school?

I'll be pitching in to help Bruce and Jennifer on this one today, so let me know what questions you've got ...

Redistricting wouldn't be such a hassle if they had guidelines.

For starters: Attempt to place students in their 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd closest school when possible.

If these board members would quit their behind-closed-doors methods of drawing lines, it wouldn't be so painful.

Note to Schoolboard and Grier: Redraw the lines JUST LIKE YOU DO IN GREENSBORO. High Point is seriously tired of this sloooooooow screw!!!!!!!

No one was surprised. It was a only a matter of "when" not "if". IT was always doomed to fail. You cannot keep jamming redistricting down people throats. Too many lessons have been learned. Parents aren't just taking it anymore.

NoMore,

I wouldn't rest easy just yet. The IT plan may be history, but redistricting looms on the horizon. The board is very enthusiastic about diversity (shame they don't have the same enthusiasm about test scores) and will do what it takes to diversify the schools, including moving the assignment zones so that North High Point kids can be bussed to HP Central, rather than attending the school right across the street. They'll come at you with the thought that "ok we dumped the Choice plan, but we're moving the zones; you can't have it both ways."
There's still a fight out there, so don't lower your guard.
