North High Point & Jamestown

Let's hear it

So it's a new year and well, that means lots of folks find it a good time for reflection. It's also a time of year where the editors here like to ask us what stories we'll be following throughout the year.

And that got me thinking about a couple of things, which led to the following questions: What do you, fair readers, want out of this blog? I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of this whole blogging thing, but want to know what you'd like to see because, well, I'm sure I can do a better job.

And as I compiled the list of stories I'm going to be working on I thought, what am I missing? There's the big things on there, like FedEx, noise mitigation in north High Point, the sewer replacement program and so on. (And it needs to be mentioned, I won't be involved much, if at all, in redistricting coverage even though I know that's probably going to be the biggest story of '06 in NHP). But I thought, well, let's see what the readers think. So tell me north High Point-ers, what do you think are going to be the big stories of '06 in our neck of the woods?

Let's talke about all of the houses that won't sell after the redistricting.

I was very annoyed by the article in Sunday's paper (N&R) that talked about the home in Jamestown that the couple has had on the market for almost a year. And the article talked about the boom in housing over in Colfax..DUH!

What they did not have the guts to mention was the fact that it's the school district that sucks over in Jamestown and that's why homes will not sell.

I've heard that if this area gets redistricted to Andrews, which is the hopes and dreams of the Superintendent, Marti Sykes, Dotty Kearns and Susie Mendenhell, that the homes will take an immediate cut of about 20%..

So let's talk about how we're all going to be stuck here when most just went outta here.

We'll seeing as we're nine days into the new year, and you've provided exactly one news posting here thus far, I'd like more postings!!!

You might also calm people down a little bit when they make asinine assertions such as that home prices could drop 20 percent on redistricting. If FedEx and the lottery plan together had virtually no impact on home prices, it's pretty darn doubtful that any single factor could move the needle that much.

EW, the amount of posting I do is a valid criticism, and believe me I'm working on getting the number up. I've also got other responsiblities beyond the blog, so I'm still learning how to balance things. One thing I'm trying to do in the new year is to get some of the other High Point reporters to occassionally post on here.

As for 4sale's concerns about redistricting effects on home sales, that 20 percent is a huge drop and not likely to bear out in the market. Although I wouldn't be surprised if houses moved from the Southwest to Andrews district saw some short-term decline. Home prices in High Point continued to climb even with the lottery. And it's rare that one single factor will have that dramatic an impact on home prices.
