A look at other newspapers

Here's a interesting look at yesterday's front pages from around the nation. I am surprised at the number of papers that used photos of voters rather than of the candidates. We debated that, but decided the page should focus on Bush and Kerry.

John -- I'm not saying this to be obnoxious, but I think the main story/photo/emphasis in the N&R should have been Burr/Bowles, the other statewide races, and the count and city races. I'm sorry, but with the the numerous up-to-the-minute resources on television and the Internet -- I haven't read a single story in the N&R in months on the national election. Not one -- and I'm a voracious reader. I certainly didn't take the time to read one at 6:00 am on Wednesday that I knew was instantly outdated. I did, however, immediately look for the local races.

We talked about that issue, too. We decided, though, that the driving force on election day was the presidential race. It was why so many people voted and what people cared most about. While we couldn't deliver the news about who won it, we could tell them about it. We're moving in the direction you're pushing, we really are. But election day is a piece of history for many of our readers. Yes, they could get it on TV ad nauseum, but for us not to focus on the presidential race would have said to readers that the Burr-Bowles race was the most important thing of the day, which just wasn't so. My guess is that many readers saw that Burr won -- which was also on the front page -- and moved on to the next story.
