Things are moving along
In addition to adding Allen Johnson, the N&R editorial page editor, to the blogging ranks, we also introduce Doug Clark, one of our editorial writers who's now blogging at Off the Record. His first foray is about his days at the High Point Enterprise and its owner Paxton.
Editorial will also begin enabling comments on letters to the editor tomorrow. Kinda cool, huh?

I seem to recall a lot of scorn and ridicule from N&R editors over the years about the Rhino Times’ Beep feature--which allows anonymous comments—and the Rhino’s policy of allowing unsigned letters to the editor. But aren’t all of these new blogging forums with their anonymous comments nothing more than a glorified Beep in a different medium?
And now you are offering a forum in which anonymous writers can comment on the letters to the editor, which you require to be signed and verified. Why should online free readers be granted privileges that paying subscribers don’t get? Isn’t this a dramatic lowering of the N&R’s long-held editorial standards?
I also read that you also are negotiating with bloggers to put anonymous work in the print edition, another long-held no-no.
What’s next? Open editorializing in your news columns? Oh, wait, that’s been going on for years.
It appears that the Rhinoization of the N&R is just about complete. John and Willy Hammer should be proud

Cool indeed. I'm off to check Doug out now.
PS. Thanks for the link fix.

I've often said that the Rhino is a most blog-like paper, complete with personal point of view and interactive features. John Hammer was early to capitalize on some of the pre-blog technology that helped democratize publishing (eg desktop design). Now the N&R is emerging as a national leader in using the web, and independent bloggers are creating their own alt-media. Maybe it's just something in the water in this town...
