Dependable, local (and speedy) coverage
We've been getting phone calls about the quick cutaway from the Duke-Carolina game to the WFMY-TV late news. The buzzer sounded, the camera focused on UNC Coach Roy Williams, who had paused and looked to one end of the court as if something was happening and, blink, here's Kent Bates and Sandra Hughes beginning the newscast. What was he looking at? Was a foul called? Was the game even over?
Jeff Carlton on our staff made a few calls. His take is here.
Check out the photos while you're at it.

Forgive me for not being a sports fan (save for baseball), but is this the same channel that cut away from the Kentucky Derby in the last little bit for local weather alerts? (hopefully not)

It was a very quick cut to WFMY,indeed.
It was clear that time was still on the clock when the ball went out of bounds. I assumed the coaches were waiting to see if that time was restored. Since the officials failed to call two fouls and a basket interference in the last minute, I guess there was no reason for them to start earning their pay at that point.
JW, the station that cut away from the Kentucky Derby was WXII (NBC). Add WXLV's cut to an infomercial instead of showing the 1999 British Open, and you have the trifecta.

Hey, now! I thought the coverage of the game was excellent. I was especially appreciative of them shrinking the screen during the action to bring us Eric Chilton's weather alert for Grayson County, VA, an area outside of the WFMY coverage area (it's the county west of Galax on the map). Now that's going the extra mile!
When the game clock hit 0:00 I couldn't wait for the news to come on so I could find out what was going on in Grayson County. If they had to break into the game to warn us, I figured surely it would be the top story.

A quick kill to stop the blood letting for those poor UNCers was maybe the most kind thing to do.
Nonetheless it would have been nice to be able to savor the moment as the tremendous Blue Devils begin their assent. Go Dook!

Wished we could have had a few more moments there to process everything. The cut away left everyone wondering if it was unfinished and without an explanantion. If WWWIII is breaking out by all means cut away, but in this case a little more time and some post game interviews would have been nice.
