Not that we're counting...

If you don't routinely read The Chalkboard, our blog on local education issues, you might want to visit it every so often. A post there now holds the record for number of comments on News & Record sites at 132 and counting. First posted on Feb. 28, the most recent comment came yesterday. The item is about how the Guilford school system is doling out federal money, but the discussion quickly centered on the competence of Superintendent Terry Grier and the school board.

This blog actually held the previous record, at 86 comments, on a post prior to the November election about an e-mail from Republican HQ. I'm delighted to cede the title.

And we're delighted to take it! (Just kidding, boss...)

In all seriousness, seeing the reader participation grow over at The Chalkboard has been a lot of fun. When we first started, we felt lucky if we got one or two responses.

Now, we certainly aren't getting 132 responses to every post, but it's not uncommon for us to get 15 or so.

There's always room for more, though. So I'd like to second John's invitation to come join us at The Chalkboard.

I once had a boss who said that all people are chiefly motivated by two things: fear and greed. To that I would add their kids' welfare.

I think that partly helps explain the reader involvement on Chalkboard. I also think you guys do a very good job with the posts there; they always seem to be on target, written in a concise manner without sacrificing background, and the headlines are very descriptive.

Not to end with a negative, but I'd love to see Biz Buzz capture at least some of the magic.

Allow me to use your former boss' words in a sentence to sum up the activity over at the Chalkboard.

Many parents fear for their children's welfare over the greed of the School Board and School Administration.

Yes John and Bruce we were going for 200 on that one strand, but I think Bruce did alright.

Mark,

You have a magic way with words.

Don't forget about all those folks who became honorary HOAW's last year - i.e. - now we can let you in on the secret "The Hell of a Woman Club" - honorary men are allowed in too. One of our mottos is we fight for what is right, Truth, Justice and the American Way; don't mess with our kids, etc. The only criteria you had to have was an abundance of "mama bear" or "papa bear" in you. Guess that about sums up the stamina of a year's work and some still going strong. And yes, Mark, I have a certificate for you.
