Faces of war

Today's front page is a different look for us. Managing Editor Ann Morris explains:

When I heard about the breadth of Allison's reporting on the "Faces of War" package, I knew we had something special. This is the first time we've had a local correspondent in Iraq, and in less than a week, she'd interviewed and shot photos of almost two dozen soldiers from the Triad.

We were discussing how to use all this material when our photo assignment editor, Leger Meyland, suggested taking the whole front page. We rarely do that, but we had an opportunity to showcase unique local reporting about a subject of great importance. We could introduce our readers to these hometown soldiers in a dramatic and memorable way. And for the families of the soldiers, the front page and accompanying inside page should provide a nice keepsake, I hope.

To find folks from the Triad, Allison walked around the base with a sign asking if anyone was from the Triad. As they approached, she interviewed them and shot their photo. Ingenious.

I'll add my two cents on the front page. To get the right look and tone, we designed this page in advance. We discussed what to do if big news broke out. We left some space on the page for another story, just in case, but we really didn't want to lessen the impact of the faces of war. In the end, the biggest story of the day -- at least according to other newspapers -- was the grounding of the shuttle fleet.

In addition to all the other components of Allison's Iraq package, we've added video.

Big props to Allison, editor Betsi Robinson, Lex Alexander and online content editor Michael Fuchs.

Agreed on the big ol' props to all involved... job well done.

BTW - what exactly is 'props'?, I asked myself since I see the term used often herabouts... and then I asked Webster -

Noun. Source: From term "prop" meaning support. Definition: Respect, kudos, or acknowledgment for an accomplishment. Context: Always used in plural form. Social Source: Residents of New York City's South Bronx.

Doug Harris did a great job designing the front today, too.

A NEW ENEMY LIST

It never ceases to amaze me how the Washington legislatures and so-called "intelligentsia" continually find new international enemies, while the majority of global countries are at peace. They kill our young in unjustified wars and justifying death "in the name of our country" at the beginning years of every new decade, they want us live in an obedient heightened state of alert or paranoia all to the detriment of our society and national treasures. This happened to us in the 50's and 60's when we feared sneak nuclear attacks and child consuming communists under our beds and now history repeats itself.

The new enemy list being sold to the gullible unthinking patriotic Americans include; Venezuela, even though we rely on 15% of our crude oil from Venezuela and whom we are continually terrorizing, China the country that produces everything within your grasp, as you read this article, and who monthly invests billions of dollars in the USA to keep us from having a new and total economic depression, Iraq the country and Sadam, who kept the Shiite fundamentalist state of Iran in military check, he was our strong ally (albeit corrupt and as vicious as our dictator allies) but supplied 8-10% of oil, yet we attacked and blamed him for 9/11, knowing very well that it was the Saudis who did it, and now rationalizing the invasion "for democracy" as we hypocritically stand behind the rest of the regional torture center dictators, Mexican undocumented immigrants, if they instantly left it would cause a secondary economic meltdown in numerous business sectors with heavy national repercussions.

Why is that we fight what we need and hug what we don't; the real causes of the terrorism and hate towards us, our support for ruthless dictators in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Egypt, puppet governments in Afghanistan and now Iraq all while we die "for democracy" in Iraq, the blind one sided pro-Israel politics and financial support, cow-boy diplomacy, waffling global politics, hiring Karen Hughes back at the State Department to improve our global image while sneaking global hater John Bolton as head of UN diplomacy to perpetuate the hate. Is there any rationality or real patriotic Americans left to alter this very stupid course?
