One year in
Lex has posted a status report on our online efforts one year in. Lex is the guy who produced an extraordinary report that we've tried to use as a road map into the future, and as usual, he's on the mark.
A couple comments on his post, which I didn't read before he posted:
* We intend to be much more aggressive about soliciting more user-generated content. The Hometown Hubs are a great start, but there are many people outside our Hubs who have things to say and they should be heard. We're currently building a structure to seek out those folks (and anyone else we can find.) Same with user-generated photography.
We're also in initial talks with some folks about hosting their blogs on our site. Right now, they are civic "leaders" -- Terry Grier actually is considering the idea -- but we aren't going to stop there.
* We have a video team that's beginning to figure out how we want to proceed with what is, to us, a huge opportunity.
* Creating a strong sports presence online is a high priority. Yes, we've read your comments and know that we can do better.
* Lex is correct about our being frugal with resources. And frugal is the politically correct way of saying cheap. It's frustrating when our eyes are bigger than our wallet because there are so many things we want to do. But we're still developing revenue streams -- see how well I can talk the talk -- from our online operation. When those streams become rivers we will have more latitude. In the meantime, we're juggling priorities, stealing time and resources from here and there, and using this as a way to push learning out into the organization. We'll be OK.
* He gives me way more credit than I deserve. The wonderful thing about what's happened here is that so much of our progress has been organic. People have taken the initiative to experiment and explore journalistic possibilities on their own. I could name them, but that would take too long and I'd leave some out. Besides, you see their names all over our site. The people whose names you don't see are the leaders behind this who aren't producing content but who are enabling and pushing: Ann Morris, managing editor; Mark Sutter, Greensboro editor; Betsi Robinson, community editor; Rob Brown, photo director; Teresa Prout, news editor; Joe Sirera, sports editor; and a slew of other editors.
This isn't really a status report or update. We have other plans, which we'll tell you about when we firm them up.
Like Lex, I wish we were further along the road. But I've learned that this is an ultra-marathon without a finish line. We're going to pick up the pace.
