Site improvements
We've made a couple of improvements on the site. We have added a U.S./World news tab to the home page, elevating the presence of national and international news and making it easier to find.
We have also made strides in fixing one of my biggest complaints about the site: the search function for news. We're ironing out some bugs, but search finally works on www.news-record.com and on the blogs. Right now, it doesn't search by writer byline, but they're working on that. As you find other glitches in it or have other suggestions, please let us know.

Can you fix the thing where when you highlight text to copy on your site you almost always highlight text above? You can never only highlight the sentence or paragraph you want.

David, I've not had that experience. Can you please e-mail me and tell me which particular pages you've had that problem on? Thanks! (This is one area in which we do NOT aspire to imitate The Washington Post.)

Boyd's problem: Every page, all the time.
Highlighting text on this site is difficult to impossible. None of the usual tricks -- simple cursor drag, shift/click, etc -- work with any consistency. Sometimes the whole page lights up, sometimes everything above the desired block (but not that block)-- but trying to highlight something lower than what you want in hopes of lighting up something higher is hit or miss, too.
Just awful.

Ed & David are right, Lex. Roch and I have the same issue, almost always in IE and sometimes in FFox. It treats the text as a single table cell and forces a select+ALL when trying to highlight, even when using keystrokes. It's the darndest problem; I have seen it on only a few other sites.
If desperate, I view/source and copy from there. Mostly, I just don't bother.
While you're fixing things, how about getting the whole page to print or PDF instead of only "up to a point." This is a cross-browser problem, too. Try a print preview on pages on which the text is longer than the sidebar.

We're working on it, folks. Thanks for your patience. In the meantime, try the "print this article" link in the right-rail "toolbox" of articles. Eliminates the highlighting and printing issues.
