Making a new hire
We've hired Margaret Wimmer as a page designer on our night copy desk. Margaret comes to us from the Lynchburg News & Advance. A graduate of Point Park College in Pittsburgh, she also worked at the Danville Register & Bee. Welcome her if you run into her. (While she will work deep into the night, I know from the time many of you leave comments that you're night owls, too.)

I hesitiate to bother you when you are answering so many posts related to the cartoons that forced people to go nuts, but, JR, is the new hire a minority?
I remember your post a while back about how you've set quotas on your hiring and how you are so proud of them. It was something about how every third hire must be a minority. Just wondering about this latest one.
How is all that going?

Jim,
Apparently JR doesn't want to answer you regarding the set aside jobs for minorities that he announced to the world a while back.
I would like to think that I'd be hired by someone because of my character and ability, not as a result of my ethnicity.

We're right on course. I've refrained from responding because whenever the question is asked the same conversation takes place, joined invariably by the same people. I promise I'll let you know if we abandon our commitment to having a staff that more closely reflects the community.
