When it rains...

it drops unmentionables a foot deep.

Bruce Buchanan, who has covered local education for us for six years -- a job that should earn him honors in the journalism hall of fame -- has resigned. He's going to become a writer with Womble Carlyle, a law firm in Winston. He describes his new job as "writing articles on ongoing cases and profiles on attorneys for the company's Web site, newsletter and brochures."

Don't ask me.

Bruce is a great reporter. He knows his stuff and gets it right. He's also one of our better, more devoted bloggers over at The Chalkboard. I'm friendly with some school board members and school system folks, and they commend Bruce for his ability to sort through the crapola to get to the nut of the issue. We'll miss him.

Wow! You're losing a good writer and a good guy.
I'm really glad now that I recently cancelled my subscription to your biased publication (a subscription that I had for more than 15 years). Maybe now you can just get Grier and Duncan to file school system propaganda directly.

Thank you to Bruce for giving the disgruntled Guilford county School families a place to find answers. He was awesome.

I'm sad for us, not the N&R, that we will now-- once again, have to beg, steal and borrow for answers. He did a tremendous service to the kids in Guilford county.

He so smart to get "outta here."

Good luck, Bruce...snif,snif....

Your friends,
Jane, Marcy...et al...

John,

Bruce will be missed. He became a friend to the parents in Guilford County with his unbiased reporting. We are truly saddened to see him leave.

Do you think you could make him stay until after redistricting?

Wow. Thank you guys; I'm honestly humbled by your kind words. I should be the one thanking you - without our readers, I wouldn't have had a job these past six years (10 years in journalism total). I truly appreciate it.

I'll be at the N&R until Feb. 24, so you aren't quite finished with me yet! I'll be back in the office on Thursday and I'll certainly say a proper good-bye on The Chalkboard.

Thanks again,
Bruce

Oh, and even though I'll be working in Winston-Salem, I'll continue to live here in Guilford County, so I'm sure I'll see you guys around!

A friend just called me tonight and told me this sad news. I was out all day. This has been a sad day. First, I found at lunch that Sadie Mays Restaurant in Jamestown is closing for good on March 4 after 23 years. Can't tell you how many great meetings we have had there with friends about school issues, etc. Got to meet Jerry Bledsoe there one day, other great local people. You never knew who you would run into.

Now I find out the best EVER reporter and my friend is leaving the News & Record. I just can't put into words how much you will be missed by all of us. Who will be there to keep you straight? (HA) The CB won't be the same without you. We will expect a grand finale post.

Now I have a reason to drive to Winston and shop at my favorite Christmas store and lunch at Village Tavern, my treat. Hey Bruce, now you can eat all the snacks, meals you want at meetings. Won't have to pass up those pimento sandwiches.

I know you will be on to bigger and better things. I wish you all the best in your new endeavor - a great new chapter opening up.

Your friend,
BA
