Feeding the hungry

As part of the Summer Harvest Food and Funds Drive, a brown grocery bag will be tucked inside Saturday's paper in Guilford County. Fill it with non-perishable items -- canned foods, cereals, pastas, peanut butter -- and drop it off at a Wachovia Bank branch during the month of July. Your contribution will benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. Well, actually, it will benefit the hungry in the 18-county area the food banks serve.

Mr. Robinson, Just a bit of information to pass on: my husband volunteers at the Salvation Army food bank stocking food items in the pantry and filling grocery bags for the needy who come in. In order to get on the list for the Food Bank they have to show actual need and then there are so many that they are only allowed one bag of groceries for each person in the household every three months. The SA would gladly give more but there simply isn't enough food donated to help these people more often. So if people will just remember there are a lot of hungry people out there and many of them are working but the cost of living is so high it is a choice of a roof over their heads or food. Sincerely, Brenda Bowers

Thanks, Brenda. No question that hunger remains a key issue in the community. Maybe having a brown bag fall out of the newspaper will make it easy for people to remember to give a little extra.

John, thank you and the News & Record for your support of this most important food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank and Greensboro Urban Ministry. In the summertime, we actually have many more people coming to us for food assistance. The main reason is because kids are out of school, and families need more food. Our Potter's House Community Kitchen feeds more people for the same reason.

We appreciate the community's support for this food drive. My prayer is that we will develop the political will to do something significant about the root causes of hunger and poverty in our country. A great place to start would be for our state and nation to raise the minimum raise!
