We'll be back tomorrow

Don't know if it was the same storm that knocked out power to thousands of folks last night, but we had a power surge here, which knocked a press unit offline and forced us to run the Sports section in black and white. (While you're checking it out, make sure you read Robert Bell's story on the North Davidson softball pitcher who puts up Cat Osterman numbers.)

JR, how come the N&R doesn't have battery backup for 24-48 hours? Most server farms do; many have diesel generator backup (right there in downtown GSO, for one). You've had a couple of electricity-related incidents. Is this a cost decision?

Wait, I get no credit for the Cat Osterman reference?

The power didn't shut down the press. It was a little blip, but it came at precisely the wrong time and caused an unusual chain reaction. A press is complicated and delicate (and impenetrable to understand for an English major).

I don't follow sports until the Yankees get into the World Series. I don't even count the playoffs anymore (BTDT and didn't get to go to the WS).
