A (good) sign of the times
We were in a long-term planning meeting today, talking about a story on Wendover Avenue. We heard the story pitch, talked about gathering archival documents to post online, about an interactive timeline, about linking to webcams and about a cool video drive down Wendover. After about 10 minutes of this, city editor Teresa Prout asked: "Thoughts about art as far as the print product goes?"
Ain't that the way it's supposed to work these days?

I've given up asking, Sue, as it keeps getting put off and put off. I plan to say nothing more about it until it's in place and ready to go.

It's not odd to hear your range of onlin ideas.
The only problem is that they are awful.
I mean, it's a road. Wendover.
The ONLY thing that *could* be worth doing would be photos through the years via an interactive.
Spare us the narrated slideshow. BORING.
Spare us a video drive down the road (many of us unfortunately have to do that daily.)
The sad thing I see from this are tons of ideas that you guys implement that are useless. They simply take resources away from the GOOD things in print.
I mean, if you're going to go all out with online ideas, why not hire people who KNOW what GOOD online ideas are?
Print folks are great at coming up with story ideas (most of which are boring), but they have no concept of what works online.

The only thing that could be useful would be photos through the years? Wow, that's kind of limited.
I bet the people reading this blog could come up with some *good* ideas in addition to that and the ones John already wrote about. How about it?

Oh, let's hear them. I'm dying to hear anything that will get more than 100 page views...
It's A ROAD!!!!
Sometimes, the sheer subject of something is so lame that the "good ideas" from it are limiting.
I'm thinking back at EVERY retrospective of any road I have ever read/seen/watched/interacted with.
Um, they're lame.

Still waiting on those great ideas...
Here's the annoying thing (out of many) about newspaper people who THINK they understand they Internet:
They have no problem thinking of "great ideas" (which really aren't that great) for a medium that they have NO EXPERIENCE with.
Yet, they would never accept a random online person walking into one of their (boring) news meetings and pitching idea after idea to THEM.
It's yet ANOTHER reason why not just newspapers are doomed, but their websites are LAME also..
