Looking forward to Thursday

I've been editor of this newspaper for nearly eight years. During that time, this newspaper and I have been mentioned probably hundreds of times in The Rhino, usually not in the best light. They've only asked me to comment on something they were working on once that I recall. So imagine my surprise this morning when John Hammer from that paper called me for a comment.

He asked if we gave a copy of the RMA report to WFMY, which reported last night that one of its reporters had seen the report. I wondered to myself why, during all the foofaraw about our having a copy of the RMA report, no one from the Rhino bothered to ask me about how we obtained it. But never mind.

No, I told John's voicemail, we didn't give a report to WFMY.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

Lots of other people (mere plebes) asked that question, John. You did not answer. You made it crystal clear you would not.

Mr. Hammer (of the mere "tabloid") knew it was a lost cause.

Maybe since most of the news folks have it now, somebody might consider releasing the RMA report to the public that paid for it?

Are you saying that had The Rhino Times asked you how the N&R obtained it you would have told him??
I find that strange, seeing as how I and many, many others urged you to reveal this info months ago.
What are we, chopped liver? :)

John Robinson said:

Sorry to be unclear. No, I was just making the point that, unlike you guys, the Rhino never asked. But now they ask whether we gave it to FMY? Just seems odd to me.

And no, I wouldn't have told him. (And, again, please don't twist my words, Dr. Johnson. I did answer. I said I would not reveal the source, which I'm sure all the anonymous and pseunonymous commenters here appreciate. :))

John,

Your original post was clear to this "mere plebe" in its original form, but then again, my knee quit jerking after I got on some meds.

Not twisting anybody's word, JR. You made it clear you would not (reveal your source). You've also made it clear you won't release the report (to anybody . . . and I would assume that would mean WFMY TV) Given your position, I'm suprised Hammer called you too.

It means we have yet another leak. The plot thickens. And a boat with that many leaks is bound to sink soon.

As a matter of observation, you answered Hammer's question. But you haven't answered "us guys".

So the answer to Jaycee's question is yes, the public who paid for the party IS chopped liver.

John Robinson said:

My memory of the questions, Dr. Johnson, were along the lines of:

Q. Will you release the report?
A. No.
Q. Why not?
A. Because the agreement with the source was not to distribute it.
Q. Who's your source?
A. I'm not saying.

And there was a lot of discussion about that.

My answer to jaycee is the same. I would not have told John Hammer anything different from that. However, he didn't bother to call then for whatever reason.

I would like to extend an invitation to you to join in on a collective blogging section of our upcoming winter issue of Reconstruction. The issue is the “Theories/Practices of Blogging.” In addition to the special section of posts on blogging there will be about a dozen essays on blogging.

The deadline is October 27th.

Our intent in this section of the issue will be to collect a wide range of bloggers and link up to their statements in regards to why they blog (something many of us are asked) and any statement they have on the theories/practices of blogging.

If you already have a post on this you can feel free to use it, or, if you are interested, you can submit a new one.

We will link to each statement from the issue at our site, with the intent of creating a hyperlinked list of statements on blogging that can serve as an introduction to blogging (or an expansion of knowledge for those already blogging).

If you are interested please contact me at mdbento @ gmail.com

John please. I'm not disputing your memory of the questions . . . or the "answers" you provided. I'm saying your answers are not really answers - at least to the questions the public deserves to know.

What I (and others I'm sure) challenge is the reasoning (as someone dedicated to the public's "right to know") behind your answers. Specifically we're talking about, (1) protecting a mysterious "source" . . . who arguably may have broken some rules by leaking the RMA report, and (2) not releasing the RMA report to the public that paid for it.

Jaycee is right. "Us guys" are chopped liver.

Interesting proposition, Mr. Benton. Might take you up on it.

And to save us time, anyone who wants to cut straight to the earlier discussion of these points can go here and here.

John Robinson said:

What I'm really waiting for are those letters to the editor of The Rhino demanding to know the source of the leaked documents -- to say nothing of printing them all verbatim -- that Jerry's using.

Based on experience, I'd say that's clearly a waste of time.

I think if there REALLY is an investigation going on, the US Attorney's Office should just subpoena the lot of you.

You're lucky they're so "conservative":)

JR,

At least Bledsoe is throwing light on the cesspool and the cabal between Linda Mile, Mitch Johnson, the Mayor and a faction at the GPD to save Hinson's job.( with the council going along like lemmings ) All this over someone of no worth.

Something was rotten in the Police Dept, still is and Jerry is exposing it. He's doing your job John, for which your reporters are so ill equiped.

Point is you cherry picked the RMA report which was a sham and farce to start with . Only those persons Mitch wanted interviewed were sought out.

There is big trouble in no-river city and it isn't going away any time soon.

Oh, so now you have a problem with leaks ?

Jim Wilson said:

Oh my gosh.

I just now read all of the Bledsoe stuff on the Rhino Times website.

JR, I hate to say this, but, uh, what is the staff the N&R doing all day?????

How on Earth did one person write a more clear, consise, honest and complete report of what happened during the whole Hinson fiasco than your entire staff?

This is just UNBELIEVABLE!

How do your reporters and editors live with themselves after they have purpetrated a fraud on the city of Greensboro with their selective reporting and accounting of this issue.

Heck, why not at least find out if Hinson reported the $575 a month rent Withers paid him to the IRS as income????

It's really embarassing.

Oh, I forgot what your staff is up to: You have Lex Alexander getting to the bottom of the next Watergate in Washington -- you know that Bush is just so crooked... Good thing Lex (of all people) is getting to the bottom of the looming Constitutional Crisis. Whew.

Jeff said:

I wish Dr. Mary Johnson was a secret report that no one was willing to divulge.

John Robinson said:

I direct you here. Our motives are often questioned. I suggest you do the same for the Rhino's series, that's all.

Why Jeff, that's EXACTLY what I am. Where've you been for eight years?

Wait, I know. In the dark . . . courtesy of our local journalists who decide what is important and what is not.

Re: questioning motives, pass out the subpoenas and let the Feds roll.
