N&R wins SND multi-media award
From Herb Everett, our web operations manager:
"The News & Record was awarded one of 14 SND.ies, honoring excellent multi-media journalism for the fourth quarter of 2006.
"From the Society for News Design press release:
An October feature award also went to The President Visits the Triad, a story on President George Bush's journeys locally by The News & Record of Greensboro, N.C.
Judges praised the Web video. "I love the level of detail here," said one, "and the fact that I don't have to dig into the stories to find out not only the basic details of what happened... but some of the intricate detail here, such as the fact that he ate hushpuppies and barbecue slaw on one of his stops."
"Other winners include: The Washington Post, Discovery.com, and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
"Special recognition goes to Feilding Cage for design and production, and Dave Parsons for video reporting and editing for the multimedia."
"Congrats to all who worked on this project including photographers Lynn Hey, Jerry Wolford, Nelson Kepley and Joe Rodriguez; reporters Jennifer Fernandez, Mark Binker, Jim Schlosser and Amy Dominello; and online editors Mike Fuchs and Mike Grossman."
I think editor John Nagy Nate DeGraff got that slaw detail when he was at Stamey's.

No reply is necessary... (heck, when has it been?)
JR, this is worrisome.
I'll tell you why.
You go out of your way to hire folks to do some of this "cool" multimedia stuff when
1) It's not really that cool. No offense, but there is no video to speak of in this Bush stuff -- and that is what I would EXPECT to see. Not a map of where he went. And, ohhhhh, it's in Flash with photos that fade to black in between each one... ohhhhhh.. cool..... (I'm joking, of course)
2) You have so many other pressing problems with your site. Seriously, there are so many other things you need to work on and hire people to fix and get right. Your entertainment and venue database is the biggest embarassement of them all. AGAIN, I checked for musical events for Saturday night and there were only THREE LISTED.
I have NO IDEA how to do a restaurant search on your site!!! And, as YOU point out that is the most searched for thing on your site.
If I EVER wanted to find a park or a lake or a day pinic place I would have NO IDEA how to use your site to do that -- and that is a venue search!
Getting all this "cool" "multimedia" stuff figured out is very, very easy. Buy the stuff you need and HIRE a TV producer or TV photographer to do it for you WHEN THE TIME COMES.
Until then, please, please focus on the things that consumers expect!!!
You tout these great leaps in "multimedia" but the rest of your site is nearly falling apart! Seriously!
(And, this is an aside, but these other sites that you rank with in this cool multimedia stuff? Check out the REST of their sites. Please. I think you will find they have figured it ALL out, not just how to do "cool" "multimedia" stuff that NO ONE CARES ABOUT!!!)
(And, don't even GET me started about how the SND -- newsPAPER DESIGNERS -- is qualified to even judge what is good online. These people are part of the problem. They have been designing products that for years have been turning off customers. So, now you want to listen to what THEY think matters? Have fun!)

Jim,
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by no video, but I suspect if you go back and look at the entire presentation, you're sure to find it.
As for the other issues you mention, we're working on those right now. There's been a legacy of piecing things together as we go. That's going to change.
Granted, the cool multimedia stuff is not for everyone. But some like it.
