Race and murder in Tennessee; the Christian-Newsom case
I've exchanged some e-mail with a man who believes we should cover the Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom murders.
Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Gail Christian, 21, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee. They were murdered, and according to the grand jury both the man and woman were raped after being kidnapped early on the morning of January 7, 2007. Their vehicle had been carjacked.
Five suspects have been arrested and charged in the case. A Tennessee grand jury indicted four of the suspects on 46 counts of murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape and theft, while one suspect faces federal charges on carjacking.
Christian and Newsom were white. The five suspects are black. Much discussion and e-mail flow around the idea that their case is being ignored because the accused are black and the victims are white. The perception is that the media sensationalize white-on-black violence as hate crimes, but don't touch it when it is the other way around. I've not read a plausible reason why the media might do this.
I told my correspondent that we aren't going to staff a case in another state without any local connection. We will publish wire stories as appropriate. Now, Jack McElroy, editor of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, the paper in the city where the homicides occurred, addresses the same issue.
To date, authorities have presented no evidence pointing to race as a factor -- much less a prime mover -- in this tragic crime. If and when they do, we should, and will, report it.
Makes sense to me.

This particular story was showcased by right-wing (can't figure out a different term for that) blogger Michelle Malkin a while back. She tried to make the case racial and sensationalize it but facts didn't support it. It could be, but is not a fact, that your emailer might be taking up that cause.

Yep. We often get mass e-mails instigated by Web sites and causes that encourage their readers to write their local newspapers. I guess it doesn't occur to them that we get suspicious when we get more than two or three letters saying the same things in only slightly different language on a topic that's not local.

In so far as I know, these story was not on any media. Can any one remember the Duke case. That was all that was on tv, radio, and printed media.
Where brother Al and Jessee?

Mass mailing or not, the case raises some disturbing points.
Just because it's been coopted by the conservatives doesn't mean the criticism has no merit.

Your paper had plently of space for Imus and Ann.
Did not know they where local people?

jaycee, you've stumped me on that one. The criticism is that we should be writing about the Knoxville case? You really think we should expend our resources on a murder that occurred hundreds of miles away?
Doug, sorry, I don't know who or what Ann is. Imus, however, is different. He's a national talk show host sending out his opinions to millions of people. We didn't put any staff on him anyway.

No, Mr. Robinson, my comment was on the case itself and your apparent dismissal of it as having no importance or significance.
My dismay is at the wire services. Had the racial makeup been reversed, we'd be seeing this story 24/7 on every mainstream media outlet in the world for weeks at a time.

What did I say that you read as "apparent dismissal" and that the story has "no importance or significance"? I understand your inclination to see this in racial terms, but as so many people have cautioned me on this blog about leaping to racial conclusions in criminal cases, I'll wait for law enforcement to say it was about race.

John, I cannot make heads or tails out of the article by Leonard Pitts,Jr. in this morning's paper. The fact that two young human beings were brutally murdured by five thugs seemed irrelevant to him !!! His only concern was the fact that it was not reported nationally???? Black crime against white crime underreported?? Racist who take an obsene and ludicrous stand ?? The TRAGEDY is the murder of two innocent people and yet he is concerned about racist reactions?? What purpose do you have in continuing to allow this kind of reporting in your paper ?? He still contends that the Duke Lacrosse Case was one of "class, privilege, sex, and race"... Not that these young men's lives have been tainted forever no matter how innocent they are. No mention of the accuser and the consequences of her actions which have been proven to be lies, lies, lies. No, everything is due to race. Take him and his biased reporting out of you paper. We don't need to read one more of his unprofessional statements and biases. Journalists are supposed to be professional ... am I right ???

"I'll wait for law enforcement to say it was about race."
As opposed to the recent "hate crime" at Guilford College, where you allowed the knee-jerk reaction of students and faculty to guide how you reported that particular incident.

Bubba, let's try to be a little accurate. The first story we had quoted court documents as saying that the students were called terrorists and the attackers used racial slurs. The people accused of attacking them were charged with ethnic intimidation.
A story the next day quoted one of those attacked as calling it a hate crime.
All of that information deserved to be reported.

Mr Pitts, a PULITZER PRIZE winner by the way, was right to tell these white apologists to "CRY ME A RIVER". Two white kids got muredered, boo-hoo. In the meantime, 500 blacks were killed but no one should care about that? Whites victimize blacks FAR MORE than blacks could ever victimize whites.
Posted on June 14, 2007 11:11 AM
It is amazing the myths people believe. The crime stats for 2002 show 1.9 million black-on-white crimes compared to 362,000 white on black crimes. Case closed. Believe it or don't at your own risk.

"Mildred Wogbash" is an idiot, a RACIST idiot. And Leonard Pitts is as repugnant as the "neo-nutzis" he claims are harassing me. His attitude towards to Newsome/Christian murders is: "Another kidnapping/rape/torture/murder. Big deal. So what? Happens all the time. Why should it be a big news story? Get over it". And yes, there's his quote: "CRY ME A RIVER". I wonder what the victim's families and friends would think about his callous, racist view that it is ridiculous to think that this a hate crime and that the murders are nothing to get excited about. What a vile man.
