Sheep shot
I was talking to online editor Michael Grossman when he got an e-mail news release from the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department. The message line read "Sheep shot." He didn't even need to open the mail to say, "Here's our No. 1 viewed story today."
We'll see. Right now, #1 is this, but it has been up all day. I think it has tough competition.

Actually, I think CM is right - shot sheep might make a good click, but gangs in Greensboro is crying out for investigation. It's news to too many people who live here that we have gangs, gang activity, perhaps gang violence and related murder.

One has nothing to do with the other, Sue.
In the past two months alone, we have written about gangs causing the county's violent crime rate to increase, gangs being accountable for the increase in robberies, graffiti vandalism being gang related, and gang activity in schools.
A good investigation into gangs in Greensboro, yes, probably. But we haven't ignored it at all.

Actually, I think CM is right - shot sheep might make a good click, but gangs in the Hood woods is more important* Sue
No doubt about that! However in the Sheep murders, two possible "Persons of Interest" have been rounded up. One is a Chinese Global Wool trading corporation and another is a group of Muslin animal vets who were confuse about the location of a new medical clinic in Rockingham county.
Just today, in my backyard, 5 gangs of squiruals jump 3 Bunny rabbits over a tuft battle about my alledged Pot plants by the fence. If animal control was on the ball with their jobs and investigate this outrageous behavior by both gangs, we could all live in peace.
The animal control unit claim this wouldn't have happen if the squiruals had completed a basic education courses on good manners and the Bunny Rabbits had learn to share the alledged Pot plants with their neigbors for the common good of socialism.
Of course Sue, as the animal control unit commander said, The final solution to this issue is for the parties involved in this mess be mirochip and that includes the property owner who chose to feed animals without approval.

Actually, I did get the point, JR. I was trying to make the point that I think an ongoing series in the N&R will do more to bring to the public's attention a sinister problem many aren't aware of and should be. It lends itself to graphic investigative reporting. I hope you will consider more of it.
No, the N&R is not remiss in its reporting on GSO gang activity, but I think it deserves more coverage and investigation. The shot sheep is attention-grabbing and that makes clicks and headlines. I'd like both.

Maybe so. We've sniffed around before and couldn't find any real indication that gangs are quite the problem that some people think they are. A problem, yes. Pervasive, no. I've heard talk that the three homicides of teenagers lately were all gang-related. Police don't tell us that, though. Only one of them might be, they say.
It's a sexy topic, though. I'm just not sure it is one of those overriding public interest issues. But we'll ask around some again.

Good Lord. There is just so much to assail in JR's last comment, I don't know where to start.

"Not sure" that gangs present an "overriding public interest," John? Maybe not in Starmount, but how about taking up residence in one of GSO's housing projects for a week and reporting back to us?
