All shook up
Elvis died 30 years ago tomorrow. I wasn't a fan -- too old and fat; him, not me -- so I don't remember where I was when I heard that he died. I do remember, though, one thing about that day.
I was a reporter at the Asheville Citizen. The national editor, who was also in charge of designing the front page, comes out of a 7 p.m. meeting with the guy in charge of our presses and says, proudly, "Who says we can't print live color!" The next day we published a color photo of Elvis circa 1959 on the front page.
For those among you who aren't old newspaper people, it took an act of the publisher or the death of an entertainment icon to publish a color photo during the live press run at that paper. Yes, those were the days.

JR! Us real Elvis fans know the real story about his sudden death. He turn Blue on the John and was all shook up in the end. Why is it that the mainstream media never gets the picture right about entertainers and political leaders when they kick the bucket. You do remember how Nelson Rockfeller pass on don't you? Now that was a real stiff death for the media to report on.

Lex, my memory is that the registration was right, but the color was washed out.
I know about both Rockefeller's death and Elvis's and I believe I read about them in the mainstream media. Where'd you find out about them?

At the Supermarket Maz counter when Elvis approach me and suggested that I purchase the National Inquirer so he could get up to speed on the OJ trial. As to Rockfeller, I had just read about Larry Flynn getting shot in front of a Georgia Court House when he was purchasing the local Republican party paper to see who was in the singles section and lonely.
