Welcome Rhino readers

I'd like to welcome readers of the Rumors column in the Rhino. Thanks for visiting. If this is your first visit, feel free to browse the Web site, leave comments and return often. As you can see, I post about every day and will talk with you about the paper and journalism and stuff. You will also find others simpatico here.

The video you're looking for is here. John Hammer treats this as something serious, but this was done as a lark.

By the way, in case you were wondering, the difference in being a journalist and a newspaperman is pretty simple. Journalism is a trade with standards and values. Newspapers are a product in which journalism can be practiced. I would link out to the Rhino reference, but it's not posted. (Another difference in being in the journalism business and the newspaper business.)

Hey! Hey! You can't blame me for being a bit snarky, can you?

You never cease to amaze me. The last two posts here are classic JR. But you can't figure out what you're doing wrong.

And actually, YES, I can.

The Rhino posts last week's paper this week

This post does seem to contradict your earlier posts decrying the lack of civility on the blogs, John.

If snark, in this case, is a wink-wink-nudge-nudge insult, then you're trying to have it both ways and it just can't be done. Shouldn't be done.

John Robinson said:

Sorry, Elizabeth, but this post hardly feels uncivil or disrespectful of the Rhino. It's not personally insulting to anyone. He took a shot at the paper, expressing wonderment at something on this blog. I'm explaining it with a little sarcasm and, frankly, wonderment of my own. Seems fair. And tame.

Elizabeth Wheaton said:

Hmmmm. The word "sarcasm" rang a distant bell for me, maybe all the way back to high school English where I remember being cautioned that sarcasm was one of the most difficult attitudes to express effectively in writing. And one most often misinterpreted.

Is it possible that a lot of what we're taking as nastiness is sarcasm gone awry?

Does it make any difference?

Just pondering...

John Robinson said:

I'm not taking the position to rid the blogosphere of sarcasm. (Then again, I also don't pay attention to alot of the baloney I was taught in high school English, but that's another topic.)

I take the position that you argue ideas, not personalities. That you respect the person, even as you may not respect the idea.

The post responds to amazement on Hammer's part that I said I was in the journalism business, not the newspaper business. John's a smart guy, there's no doubt in my mind that he knows the difference. So, I conclude he just wrote that to make fun. That's OK. He does it weekly. But I'm not sure his readers know the distinction between the two. I made it clearer. And had some fun doing it.

Again, not personal. Not disrespectful. Not insulting. At least in my definition of those terms.
