Blogging council member

Wouldn't it be helpful if one of these Greensboro City Council members interested in transparency had an active blog? I wonder what that would be like.

"Transparency" is a sound byte, apparently, and not a promise to be fulfilled.

Well, it might be pictures of grandchildren, remarks about committees she/he is on, Heart of the Triad, Rotary Club, more pictures of grandchildren, pictures of veggies from garden, more pictures of grandchildren. That councilmember might be more of a hinderance to transparency by misleading statements or simply informing the public "If you knew what I know or I would love to tell you but it will interfere with an investigation". In other words, not much help!

You may not have liked what Sandy wrote, Betty, but at least she was out there and accessible.

And perhaps some of the new council members could do a better job!

I have been asking the same question...

This would be a good first step for new and old council members.

Heck...it would be great if our county commissioners would step up and blog as well.

Merry Christmas

Continued resentment from the "We (Heart) Sandy" fan club.
President: John
Vice President: Allen
Treasurer: David
Secretary: Sue
Only four members strong but very dedicated and unwilling to allow Trudy to warm her seat.
Grapes served at fan club meetings but be sure to look at expiration date.

Tony,

I disagreed with Sandy's position on making information surrounding the Wray affair public. I admired her willingness to blog, her excellent attention to constituent services and tireless efforts to serve on various committees. Does that make me eligible for the fan club?

Absolutely, Roch. Tony doesn't understand that you don't have to agree with her to like the fact that she makes an effort.

Tony, Trudy has her seat and I don't begrudge her that at all. She won fair and square. I am disappointed, however, that we haven't heard from her over the past three days, but perhaps she's out of town.

Roch, the four officers would have to vote you in but I would say you had a pretty good chance of membership.
Roch and John, I do appreciate the fact that she took the time to respond to constituents as she responded to every inquiry that I presented to her, if memory serves me right.
It's just the content of those responses that I had trouble with.
And now the constant "Sandy, Sandy, Sandy" from the N&R and certain bloggers appear to be the expired grapes mentioned above.
By the way, did she ever tell either one of you guys "what she knew that she wished we knew"?
I guess we may never know what Sandy knows but there are certainly less Mitchell Johnson bobble heads on this city council.
And that's a good thing.
Merry Christmas guys. I've enjoyed our conversations this year.

Constant?

What I think you're missing about this is that we care less about what she said -- Roch is right -- but that she was at least out there saying it. And not just on this one issue but on many. We no longer have that.

The point of this post is that you can talk all you want about transparency on the campaign. Now is the time to do something about it. So far, I haven't seen much.

Disagreed on above (imagine that), although I don't disagree with the first line of your original post.
Care less about what she said?
I only cared about what she said, not where and how she said it.
Just by virtue of holding the title of Greensboro's BlogDiva doesn't make her any more right when she's right or wrong when she's wrong, whether she's using a bullhorn or a blog.

JR: "Now is the time to do something about it."

Very much agreed.

During the recent city council campaign, most candidates, myself included, spoke strongly in favor of transparency (I believe Sandra Groat coined the word) in the new City Council. I think what we were all saying is that information would be provided without undue delay on important issues. This included transparency in matters left undone by the outgoing council, e.g., David Wray dismissal.

I believe the new City Council will exert an effort to require the release of timely and accurate information on important matters. First things first - they need to become organized with their own set of goals, policies, and guidelines. They must get a solid fix on city finances to know what resources are available to address the growing list of major issues. This is where the city manager must be effective.

Thanks, Tony, but I don't know why you keep trying to make this about Sandy. It is the sitting council members who should be feeling the pressure to be transparent. Now we might hear from them next Thursday. I don't know about you, but I'm wondering where the transparency is.

Given the results of the election, perhaps this council has decided that "transparency" isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Remember, elected officials start running their reelection campaigns the day after they win.
