Merry Christmas
After several years of "Seasons Greetings" and "Happy Holidays" at the top of the front page on Dec. 25, we stripped "Merry Christmas" across the front this morning.
I had been the holdout, believing that that phrasing wasn't as inclusive as the newspaper should be in this multi-cultural, multi-spiritual community. I suppose that lined me up on the wrong side of the "war on Christmas" crowd. But given how silly I think that faux "war" is, who cares?
After some subtle lobbying by a few staff members, I relented, deciding that I was being silly, too. Wishing our readers a Merry Christmas on Christmas Day seems warm, friendly and, I hope, inclusive.
Merry Christmas.
Update: Terry Heaton has a take.

The other aspect you may have missed was it's hard to say Merry Christmas when its pretty much the same work day for people such as yourself. For the people who work today (and late last night) to ensure that life continues for the rest of the public deserve a big THANKS.

Great move! Now please continue with Happy Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Halloween, Easter, etc. at the appropriate times.
It's all inclusive and personal! Just a bit more work for y'all to keep up with.

I didn't mind the "Merry Christmas." It WAS on Christmas day, and a sizable majority of your readers celebrate it.
The giant chunk of Opinions devoted to the gospel of Luke, on the other hand, is a little odd. Again, I get that most of your readers celebrate Christmas. But for those of us who are not (including those who celebrate the holiday for non-religious reasons), picking up the paper of record and finding a big chunk of scripture is a little weird.
Thanks for keeping it in Opinions, though. Happy holidays.
