Jim Schlosser to retire

Jim Schlosser is retiring.

Let that sink in for a moment, and let me compose myself.

Jim has been a reporter here for 41 years. No, that's not precise enough. Jim has been one of the best and often the best reporter we've had for 41 years. He's been the first reporter in the newsroom every morning, and often one of the last to leave. He's done as much as anyone to educate people about the history of Greensboro. He was one of our early bloggers. He's our institutional memory. Better than that, he's an institution.

He has a few more weeks, and he's not gone even then. He has written some stories that we've saved to publish during the run-up to Greensboro's bicentennial, and then he will return as a weekly columnist.

More later.

I've enjoyed Mr. Schlosser's historical stories for years. His contributions will be missed.
Best wishes to him on his retirement.

During my years as City Editor of The Record(1968-'74) Jim Schlosser was integral to the
great success the afternoon paper enjoyed. We won lots of national and state awards by printing the news and 'raising hell' in Guilford County. He is a reporter's reporter.
The News-Record will be dimmer without him.

I deleted a comment that linked to a story that was not ready for publication and that had been up for about half-a-second by mistake before we took it down.

I was reading one of Jim's stories the other day and wondering how in the world anyone could acquire even the vast amount of local history that Jim has probably forgotten, He's a vast repository of background knowledge that will be sorely missed by this reader.

Glad to hear that Jim is staying on as a weekly columnist, however. He's still got a lot of things to impart before he is allowed to completely leave the payroll.

Also, I'm looking forward to his upcoming book.

Jim's reporting was good for Greensboro. I'll miss his byline.
