Transparency in government

Margaret Banks at Scoop articulates what I've said several times recently.

This isn't a case of the media vs. the government, which is often how civic officials attempt to portray it. We are not the story. Margaret is not the story. This is a case of the public demanding to know what its government -- and its money -- is doing. Period.

Spare me the sanctimony. The GNR is part of of Greensboro's problem. The lefty cretins as the "Greensboro Daily Worker," as I like to call it, are oh so cozy with the government doofs they write about. This notion that there is some sort of "media government conflict" is a diversionary tactic. You are in bed with the government on most issues. The perfect example of that is the ongoing issue of David Wray, the "Black Book," and Lt. Hinson where the Greensboro Daily Worker has helped cover up important information that would exculpate Wray, et al. If it wasn't for the Rhino, a newspaper that is doing REAL reporting on civic issues here in Greensboro, we wouldn't know many of the truths about this issue that the Red Guards and the GDW don't seem to care about.

Ummm-hmmm. I'll let your comments speak for themselves, Ken, except, to the point of the post, you might ask the Rhino editors what they think of government transparency.

I disagree - this is a story about the News & Record and Margaret. You asked for the wrong memo, but somehow expected that the city staff should be able to read your mind and give you the correct memo - that by the way, proves that Wray knew about the black book.
Margaret should not be reporting these stories and it should be clear that the story was created by the News & Record and its request.
As well, the follow-up story with Rakestraw calling for Johnson's resignation was shallow and thin.
As readers, we see the real story. Own up to it.
I agree 100 percent that the public has the right to know. There are plenty of instances where this is indeed a problem, but this isn't one of them. When you are doing a story of this caliber you should understand what you need and how to ask for what you need. This didn't happen and the result has been this brouhaha.

It would be fair and transparent to point out that you're a government employee, wouldn't it, Robin?

Robin said:

So, this is accurate, but has what to do with the issue that was posed.
I am a state employee. I'm in a PR like job and from time to time called on to provide information. I pride myself on doing that part of the job well, effectively and as yet have had little or no negative comments from the reporters I've worked with in my present job or in the other three PR jobs I've had.

The issue is transparency in government. You are in government, blaming the newspaper for not asking for the right thing. Seems pretty similar to me.

As for the rest of your comment being accurate....no, I disagree with all of it.

To coin a phrase, "move on" along folks. There is no point in arguing with the Editor of the GSO Daily Worker (I like it;).

Indeed, Margret is not the story.

Is that the reason why Lorraine Ahearn is not on the story any more?

Focus, Bubba, focus. While I'm not surprised that someone would insert Lorraine into this latest discussion, it's not about her, either.

Bubba said:

Focus, John, indeed.

You missed the point, possibly on purpose.

What's the point, Bubba? (Feel free to take that either way.)

Margaret is not the story.

At the beginning, and for some time, Ms. Ahearn was.

Is she no longer on the story for that reason?

I disagree, Bubba -- shocking, I know. Jerry tried to make Lorraine the story in the beginning, and a certain mythology has grown up around that among some people, but she wasn't and isn't the story.

Lorraine isn't on the story now because she's a columnist. She routinely has moved off her column to cover certain things but she always returns to her column, which she has done in this case. Our city hall reporter is covering this city hall story.
