The lives we lead

In a private e-mail about our very brief history of Greensboro reader participation thing, a reader sadly observes that one-third of the comments are about race in some way: Skip and Earl, the International Civil Rights Museum and the 1979 shootings.

And people say we make it all about race.

The reader's six-word comment: Your commenters lead bitter, miserable lives.

I scoff at such sentiment. I mock it. I deny it!

Your life isn't miserable, is it?

Thought experiment: if you banned any reference to race in your paper for one year, would that improve or damage race relations in Greensboro?

Yes, it's a hypothetical, and yes, there are important journalistic reasons why you can't, but I would suggest the situation would improve for this reason: race circulates in print differently--and more perniciously--than it operates in everyday life.

Bitter, miserable lives? Well....yeah....
What's your point?

Race is (sadly) a big chunk of Greensboro's history; how can it possibly be ignored?

Until people can learn to accept history for what it is - and look ahead, it's always going to be (sadly) a big chunk.

They were ugly times - not just in Greensboro.

Times have changed dramatically; but it seems as though a few continue to (sadly) perpetuate racism, rather than exploit the strides made to improve the lives of those adversely affected by it.

John, the hyperbole of your reply( scoff, mock and denying") reply above is either sarcastic or you really are cruising down de' Nile on Cleo's barge, getting fanned by Nubian slaves, and your overcompensation shows.

Which is it?

John Robinson said:

No clue what the Nile reference meant, but I was really trying to show that I wasn't taking the writer's comments too seriously. Sorry if that didn't come through.

Skeet Club Savage said:

John, you have to make a point to get out more.

John Robinson said:

Thanks for your concern, Skeet.

Skeet Club Savage said:

John, you have cut us some slack and realize, after declaring that David Wray resigned and apparently meaning it, that for the rest of your life, none of your fans will ever again be able to tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

John Robinson said:

Oh, Skeet, just for the historical record, I'm assuming you are being sarcastic because you haven't provided any evidence other than your personal interpretation that David Wray's departure from the city was anything but a resignation.

Skeet Club Savage said:

This is obviously a matter of semantics, dependent on how one defines the termination of employment. The generally recognized defintion of termination is being denied further access to the workplace by purposeful action of the management.

In 2008, a corollary to this definiton, which we will call The Robinson Corollary, was adopted by a band of journalistic brigands in the Piedmont region of North Carolina in support of a certain manager of questionable character, the substance of which hereby decreed that; in addition to the above purposeful action, termination can only be truly valid if accompanied by the words "You are fired", which certain managers, due to paucity of certain parts of the male anatomy, cannot bring themselves to say. If these three words are not verbalized, then the employee will be declared to have "resigned"

John, if nothing else, you'll be famous and in Business law books everywhere.

John Robinson said:

That's pretty funny, Skeet. Unfortunately, the man resigned. Check it out when you come back to planet Earth.

Mr. Robinson, I guess in your book a woman raped at gunpoint just "had sex" with some guy, right?
Talk about being in outer space, sheesh....

Remember Sage Binker's words:

"Alright...I've got to go on the campaign trail and commit some journalism for a couple days ... y'all play nice."

HAPPY 200th, everyone! Play nice, now.

John Robinson said:

Don't worry, Maria. We're just trash talkers with radically different views of reality.

Skeet Club Savage said:

What you mean, John, is radically different "spins" on reality.

John, we're both talking about the same thing here. Admit it. I'll say right here on the blog that Wray resigned. I won't even use quotation marks. Now you just say he was terminated, and we can go our merry ways.

Roger Greene said:

I'd say he resigned in the same way that John Bunting resigned as Tarheel football coach last year, in a resign or be fired sorta way.
