Howard Coble on the front
Does this story about Rep. Howard Coble and its display seem as if we are giving him an advantage in an election year?

The question was raised yesterday. We decided that it is noteworthy that Coble has become the longest serving Republican in the state. With the election a long four months away, we didn't think the story would unduly sway any voter now. Had we been trying to parse his views and votes over 24 years, we would have handled the story differently.
Of course, Dr. Bratton may not see it that way.

Thanks, Doug. But how does the display of the Coble story jibe with the narrative that we "suck up to democrats?"

It is appropriate for the N&R to recognize the long term of service by Howard Coble to residents of the Sixth District, and his quiet record of distingnished service in the U. S. Coast Guard. Representative Coble is a principled individual and a conservative Republican in the most noble sense of the word. I only wish he had accepted the Congressional retirement plan so his eventual retirement would put him in the millionaire company of his colleagues in both parties. But that wouldn't be Howard.
Howard has been a life long public servant, and his reward will be the satisfaction he takes away from the job with the quip, "well done."
