KKK rides again

A subscriber writes that the KKK is back, dropping its one-page garbage with an advertising flier on driveways. Some people think it is delivered by us. It's not.

The fliers are anonymous, of course, in keeping with the organization's cowardice.

We suggest the people who object to them contact the city, given that this is considered littering under city ordinance.

Some people think it's you?

You must be delivering to the Planet Xenon in the Alpha Moroni solar system. And here I thought the tendency was toward smaller and smaller hard-copy circulation ranges.

I see where you're coming from, John. But I checked the local littering ordinances and I am of the opinion that classifying these Klan fliers as litter is a real stretch (even though their content may be garbage). Secondly, there is a matter of practicality to consider: the police have more important things to do than go looking for some nut tossing literature. Lastly and most importantly, even idiots have a Constitutional right to free speech (unless the fliers are advocating violence or illegal activity).

Be all that as it may, I'm doubtful that anyone has the right to toss objectionable content onto your property. I don't think the constitutional right to free speech allows you to put something onto my property. In the past, the city has suggested to us that this activity comes under the littering ordinance.

I agree that the police have more important things to do, particularly since it would seem to be impractical if not impossible to catch the distributor. Still, why not make an official complaint, rather than to grump privately?
