Radical Islam's DVD

Many newspapers across the country distributed a controversial DVD today about Islam, titled "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West."

The documentary showcases scenes of Muslim children being encouraged to become suicide bombers, interspersed with shots of Nazi rallies, says the Editor & Publisher article linked above.

It was shown on Fox News just before the 2006 mid-term elections, and conservative activist David Horowitz screened the film on college campuses during 2007. An article at the group's site, www.radicalislam.org, endorsed John McCain as the strongest candidate this past week, then was pulled down. The DVD carries on-screen text near the outset that it is not indicting most Muslims.

We did not distribute it. I was not involved in the decision; it was an advertising call, in keeping with advertising policies.

I asked our publisher about it. He said it was divisive and plays on people's fears and served no educational purpose. The revenue it would have brought in was not a motivator.

As I've said on other occasions about news decisions, just because you can publish doesn't mean you should.

The Charlotte Observer distributed the DVD with Saturday's daily. I complained, it was Saturday after all, and no one with the pay grade to listen was there, and the ones who were clearly didn't want to hear it. Sadly, not even appeals to their personal responsibility got me very far.
Last night only one local TV station mentioned it, but even that was slanted as a protest from the city's Muslim community taking it personally, not as to the discussion that needed to be addressed about the appropriateness of a customer-paid newspaper subscription service being used as a "cost-effective" propaganda" delivery service.
We got no prior notification from the CO here that this was to be done or any controversy surrounded it. It's always "bad" when the newspaper itself is the "news," who reports it?
I guess of the many questions I have about this, with few drawing attention to it, or concerned about it, the one that now presses is--Is nothing or the less said about it, the better? So we've contributed more waste to the dump and nothing else? Good!
But Editor Ed Williams said his final words today on the Viewpoint page, a farewell after 35 years of sometimes bland, sometimes insightful, but always even-handed writing and fair-balancing position taking. He leaves, for the most part, with his integrity intact. Since this seems rather sudden, you have to wonder if it just another of these amazing coincidences of late.
If this the CO under new or NEO management, the article still quiring the father of Ms. Hunter's little girl on the front page of the Local News Section and given additional space on an interior page says a lot a things about priorities vs. selling papers. Surely it's not simple "National Enquiry" envy? Why keep such an inconsequential story alive. Prosecution vs. persecution, is it really the wholly up to the readership to draw this line now?
And what if the outfield conspiracy group have raised a point--"the distribution of this hate message masquerading as paid newspaper advertisement is meant to be a form of "assisted suicide" for the ailing print press?" The 'net news is certainly convenient, but all the established legal precedents our Free Press operates today with were based on a print media and all that came with it. A "forced" transition vs. the natural transition has many verification dilemmas, and the evolution over time would have afforded the transfer of relevant legal precedents. Not a good event in a Presidential Election year, especially in the weeks running up to Election Day, Election Day coverage, and the vote count, and any reports of abuse. 2000 and 2004 would have been a lot darker without the Miami Herald and her Florida sisters.

We were a subscriber of the News & Observer until this past Saturday when we found this divisive DVD included in the paper.

Even though an editorial on the front page reflected on this difficult decision, I strongly believe that the N&O made the wrong decision to add fuel to what at times borders hate-mongering.

Thank you for the courage to decline this advertisement, I wish more publications would have followed your lead.

It's a sad day said:

There is gut test appropriate here. Newspaper execs should have asked themselves if they would have distributed and accepted advertising dollars for a propaganda, hate-and-fear mongering film about Jewish people or African-Americans.

What does this say about our industry?

Were your executives afraid the press building would be bombed?

John Robinson said:

Neither paranoia nor fear is a big driver of any decisions around here, Harry.

fev said:

Congratulations, John. It's good to know some papers told these folks to take a hike.

Martin said:

Jim,
You and your team are true Americans. God bless you and yours.

Martin said:

Sorry, I meant John Robinson

Donna said:

It was alarming to learn how this hate mongering film is now being distributed but heartening to learn that Greensboro News & Record has the ethical fortitude to turn the Clarion Funders away. I can only hope my community's paper shares your opinion of doing the right thing.

USMC Mom from Texas said:

I commend you for upholding your advertising standards. I am now a subscriber to your newspaper. Thank you!

Nazir said:

Mr. Robinson, we appreciate you and your newspaper being more concerned about the harmony of the community and ultimately the country. An extremest Muslim group is as bad as an extremest Christan and as bad as an extremest Jewish group...

I APPLAUD MR. ROBINSON'S DECISION NOT TO PUBLISH THIS LUDRICIOUS PUBLICATION. ISN'T THE CLARION FUND A HUGE CONTRIBUTOR OF JOHN MC CAIN? MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD EXPLAIN THE FACTS TO ALEXANDRA VILLOCH, MIAMI HERALD V.P. OF ADVERTISING THAT "DISCRETION IS THE BETTER PART OF VALOR". YOU COULD ALMOST SEE WHAT SIDE OF THE AISLE SHE'S STANDING.
NOW'S HE'S BEEN CREDITED FOR THE BLACKBERRY.

Thank god there is still people like you. God bless you.

Good for you for not being a sicko propagandist.

I'm neither American nor in the US but I have heard about your decision not to distribute this DVD and I would like to thank you and commend you for a brave act that is often wrongly mistaken as "anti americanism".

Isolating and demonising any group or race or sect doesn't help anybody it simply causes a negative wave that affects us all.

Thank you again and well done for taking a step away from the rest of the crowd.

Little rant:

Why isn't there a DVD on the the rest of us muslims who don't subscribe to fear and terror...why isn't there a film telling everybody how "normal" we are???

This is the closest I could find and I hope nobody objects to me sharing:

Thank you, John Robinson! The city that held the Woolworth's sit in has done it again! Say no to hate.

I'm a UNC-G alumni in Portland, Oregon. You have made me proud of the 3 years I spent delivering the Greensboro Daily News on my bicycle.

John Wright said:

Mr. Robinson - It saddens me somewhat to write you to thank you for doing the right thing, but you did and I am. I look forward to visiting your city in the future and thanking you in person.

It is sad to feel it neccessary to thank a news source for doing the right thing. But as stated I am. Please visit the site ae911truth.org...these are architects and engineers for 911 truth...The site was established by Richard Gage an architectural and engineering firm owner from the San Francisco Bay area. He of course is an architect, and his firm specializes in building steel reinforced buildings. He was awakened to the fallacies of the official 911 story by Dr David Ray Griffin..author of multiple books concerning the lies being perpetrated on the American people about 911. Please visit ae911truth.org...thanks

You people are insane! I guess it does not take long to forget what happened in NYC. The DVD was educational and factual. The DVD doesn't say most Muslims hate all people that don't worship like them. But there are people who do. If your life is that sheltered from reality then I feel for you. Do you think they made up the videos of the children screaming hate and death to America and the West? Use some common sense and do some research on your own. I am glad that someone sent this video out but then again I did not need it to know the truth. Don't be a sheep!!!!

Kudos to the Greensboro News Record. I'm from near Philadelphia and I was shocked and ashamed that the Philadelphia Inquirer didn't have better judgment. This was no better than accepting paid advertising from the KKK with hateful messages about blacks, Jews and Hispanics. What's most amazing is that it's produced and promoted by militant Jews, who would scream bloody murder if the KKK or any Islamic organization published anything like this despicable DVD, even about the most radical Zionists.

While researching Obsession, I came across this article about an Israeli terrorist who's deed is being honored and celebrated by militant Jews. http://
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/685792.stm
How are they any different than Radical Islamists celebrating 9/11 or the blowing up of a bus in Tel Aviv?

The Obsession DVD is also being distributed by the Republicans, obviously timed and targeted toward voters in the battleground states, in the hope that this can bring Barak Obama down in the elections. They're trying to take advantage of the fact that more than half of American voters don't even know that Barak has been a Christian for most of his life (all of his adult life). FOX and the Repugnant Party have been trying to confuse Americans about Obama's Christian faith throughout the campaign, by calling him by his middle name whenever possible.

Yes, he's named after a father who was a Muslim, and who abandoned him and his mother when he was very young. He was raised by his white Christian grandparents from Kansas throughout most of his school years.

Societies are judged by the way they treat their own people. Agree with this video or not, Muslims are spreading hatred to their children and raping their women. I myself have never been a racist person, but when it comes to the issue of radical muslims I will stand up and put all else aside to protect our children, our way of life and most of all this country from a force that is full of at most cowards.

jaycee said:

I just received this video today.
I must agree with John Doe above.

Arablish said:

I bought this DVD when it first came out and I believe every American should see it. I think this newspaper is just afraid of the Muslim backlash it could have received. I say this documentary should not offend Muslims, only the radical ones.

I do not feel hatred towards Muslims after watching Obsession, instead it made me more aware of the threat America faces and actually makes me feel sorry for the brainwashed people who submit themselves to the hateful jihad idealogy.

Wake up people! There's nothing wrong with being aware of the threat that is right in front of you.
