Canada Dry

My wife is happy for a variety of reasons about this news. Me, I'm happy that the number of times we need to include the following sentence in any story is now dramatically diminished.

The property is owned by Susan Robinson, the wife of News & Record Editor John Robinson, and her brothers, W. Hardy Spence and Royall Spence III.

The sentence was included in the interest of full disclosure. Even so, she and I didn't discuss this deal at home. At work, I didn't participate in news coverage discussions about it. I also didn't participate in the editorial board discussions that suggested the city not buy it.

Being involved -- even when you're not involved -- in a news story is a pain.

What I don't understand is why the City Council didn't delay this action till our money situation improves. I'm having trouble paying my property taxes.

I'm not opposed to the purchase, however i have great concern with this

Don Moore said:

It's not your fault the City Council is clueless. Congratulations for dumping the property.

All they need to do is get D.H. Griffin to give the a 2 for 1 discount for the Auditorium and bottling building to create more on-site parking for the upcoming ACC Tournament.

So when will the check arrive?
First round's on you....:)

So, John you're not happy about the money, huh?
Only that you won't have to print a few extra words in the paper. Okay, we believe you. Duh...
Gee, I hope I hit the lottery big so I don't have to keep going down the Seven-Eleven and buying those pesky tickets. I hope I sell my house so I can take down that kind of ugly sign in my yard.
Yeah. John, John, John. You are a peice of work.
Please don't ever change.

In all honesty and in JR's defense, how many of us have any control over what our wife does for a living, or thinks, or conducts her business or that of the in-laws. If you think you do, it's probably an illusion.

I think it's more people were looking for answers on the dearth of critcial thinking/ reporting on the part of your newspaper re: the city of G-Boro.
It's Real Estate 101, you don't critisize or otherwise piss-off prospective realty clients. I know you say you didn't participate, but do you think you are working in a vacuum?

Tommy said:

Congratulations to your wife and her family. Being paid over the appraised amount on a property that hasn't been recently appraised, in light of the current decrease in property values is certainly a fortuitous event.

How our City Council could approve such a purchase with their vast real estate experience is another matter. The creative financing Mitch Johnson "outlined" for this purchase should have also included information concerning the cities budgetary shortfall he was obviously aware. How we can spend 5.3 Mil. when it is expected that we will be 4.8 Mil. short for just this year is questionable. Would all of those who voted in favor of the purchase voted that way if they had this additional information?

My fear is our cities push for development, annexation and sprawl are leaving us in an unsustainable position. The issues that helped create negative situations on High Point Rd./ Lee St. are continuing to force the city to deal with blighted areas, vacant real estate and diminishing property tax revenues. I would think that in light of the countrywide and global economic meltdown we are experiencing we would have learned that we can not finance our futures away.

Well, I lost the company pool over how long it would take savage to say something. I was expecting you to move faster, skeet.

skeet club savage said:

John, all I can say is; "I try". What would you do without me?

Best of luck, and want to you know we'll be standing by you as you stoically and reluctantly deposit your nuclear family's apportioned share into the old account, as well as share your joys and hopes for the future via not having to cite the diclosure sentence any longer.

Pssssstttt...John, I think that Tommy guy above, who was kind enough to visit your blog, may expect an answer to his post. Now I know his post was kind of mundane, you know, about taxpayer concerns etc and wasn't serious, like about office pools to see when the Savage is coming back etc., it's just that the guy sounds like a sincere guy and he's probably new and doesn't get the program of you avoiding tough questons.

Come on. Cut the guy a break.

Whataya say? You got to be in a good mood.

John Robinson said:

What question of his are you thinking I need to answer?

skeet club savage said:

Oh, I don't know, John. Just thank the guy for congratulating you for no longer being yoked to the disclosure statement thing, I don't know.

You could say: "so, okay the city paid too much, tough titty" but I don't want to put words in your mouth. You're the blog host, the wordsmith.

Tommy said:

Thanks for your encouragement, Skeet. It might be interesting to know who brokered this deal because of the repercussions of either broker, buyer or seller, not providing a recent appraisal " material fact" to the city.

John probably doesn't have access to that information, but maybe he could shed some light as to why the approval to purchase story was run in Wednesday's paper and the budget shortfall story was not run until Thursday.

John Robinson said:

Skeet needs no encouragement.

Not sure what you mean about who brokered the deal. It is well known that the coliseum management and the sports commission have pushed it. The family itself was represented by a developer.

The purchase story was in Wednesday's paper because it happened before our newspaper deadline. The shortfall story came after the deadline.

I don't suppose that Robbie Perkins had anything to do with it, did he?

Tony Wilkins said:

John, wouldn't you like to comment on the subject matter in this post at Ed Cone's blog?
I believe you'd sleep better and it may rid you of these nasty nightmares.

skeet club savage said:

John, how's the head this this am (or was it yesterday a.m.) after all those toasts celebrating you being free of the terrible burden of the disclosure statement?

Here, here. ...And so say all of us. And so say all of us. For he's the jolly-good fellow. And so say all of us.

keith said:

yes jr using king zoning stud marc isaacson as your lawyer who gives generously along with his homemaker wife to the majority of greensboro city council members doesn't hurt either.

keith said:

sorry correction henry isaacson

John Robinson said:

Let's see...hire a good lawyer who can get things done or hire one who can't. What to do? What to do?

Actually, the company's attorney is Marc, not Henry.

keith said:

you have to do what you have to do but we know all about these certain lawyers and if the greensboro news and record would actually report the total conflicts of interest it might be a better day in this area but i am sure you won't do that.

skeet club savage said:

Keith, you're not getting the program here. We want JR to have the best atty, maximize profits, so he gets out of Dodge. Like he implies-a no brainer. The hope and thinking is; the paper gets an editor who actually cares about G-Boro city gvt. coming apart at the seams, and demands change from what's going on now, instead of rubber stamping the status quo like they've been doing for the last three yrs.

Bubba said:

Maybe JR can now retire to write that great book he's been thinking about for years: "Enabling 'Intolerable Racism' As A Useful Tool For Societal Change We Can Believe In".

william said:

She and I didn't discuss the deal at home."
Did you go to Applebee's and discuss it there?
While it is reasonable to believe that you did not participate in the news coverage, it is not easy to believe you did not discuss this at all. The fact that your bank account is going to have another $1 million - assuming the money is divided three ways - never even came up?
Or once the story came out, did your wife say, "Oh, , honey, did you read the paper this morning? Hmmm? .."

John Robinson said:

We don't eat at Applebees. I have followed the coverage in the newspaper over the years. That's how I knew the price and the buyer.

I don't know that is so hard to believe. My guess is that many people don't know the ins and outs of their spouses business dealings.

Tommy said:

John,
Pardon my naivete, but when you signed the deed of sale of the Hanner St. property to Elon U. in Oct. 2005 did you do so knowing nothing of the details? Is it common for you to sign legal documents on an uninformed impulse.

John Robinson said:

No, I knew of the details. This post was about the negotiations between the family and the city.
