War against Happy Holidays

After years moments of pondering whether we should wish our readers "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" across the top of the Dec. 25 paper -- and hearing from readers when we make the wrong decision -- we finally have some data.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Americans generally say "Merry Christmas" to greet people at this time of year, but 71% are not offended by others who say "Happy Holidays."

So sayeth the Rasmussen Reports.

I'm relieved. Last year, I wrote about the fight struggle discussion we had over the proper greeting for the Dec. 25 paper. Now that I know that 23% of the respondents -- nearly a quarter!!! -- are offended by the "Happy Holidays" greeting, it confirms that "Merry Christmas" is the way to go.

Except that, for some reason, the polling company didn't ask whether people were offended if they were wished a Merry Christmas, the idea of which is what started the whole "War against Christmas."

Put Merry Christmas on the headline because Dec. 25 is Christmas. And stop trying to equate Chanukah or any other wintertime holiday with Christmas. They're so entirely different in tradition, history and meaning that "apples and oranges" is woefully inadequate.

If someone feels "left out," then she or he should get over it. It's Christmas, fer goodness sake! Say Merry Christmas and stop agonizing. There are too many real problems out there.

The fictitious "war" on Christmas is too silly to be taken as anything other than BOR's need to make a few more dollars with his personal jihad.

Merry Christmas, JR, and may next year be a little less stressful than this one has closed for each and everyone.

The last time I looked the calendar said Christmas. If you do not think there is a war on Christmas, you live in a dream world.

Actually, my calendar mentions Christmas, Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa and Eid al-Adha. And it's got a lovely picture of a frog flying a toy helicopter.

Not everyone is like you. Maybe you should get over that, and realize "Happy Holidays" includes Christmas, too.
