« Cleaner energy can slow global warming | Main | Election should have silenced choice foes »

Issues more important than party affiliations

Regarding David Linnabery's letter, "Social Security funds deserve protection" (Feb. 6):

He wrote, "I am a Republican who is concerned about the way those whom I helped to put into office are running things. I only pray that they will do the right thing and leave our retirement alone."

He should have prayed and done more homework before he voted for George Bush and the boys. Next time he needs to consider the issues and forget about the parties. Parties are political. Issues are real.

Amen, Kevin. Now, remember that there are more than 2 parties in this country. Let's judge them all equally by their merits, not by their names.

It would behoove us all to accept personal responsibility for educating ourselves on critical issues before we go into a voting booth. For whatever reason, there are always people who don't. But all is not lost if, after realizing you should have invested a little more time and energy in learning more, you make an active effort to correct your mistake.

Having misgivings about an issue and passively stating "I pray" will yield little in the form of remedy. I am not knocking prayer; I, myself, pray every day. I am, however, suggesting more action by someone who finds themselves in such situations. I have always heard God helps those who help themselves.

For the first time in my life I have to admit a third, forth or fifth party is not such a bad idea. Our choices for a leader have become little more than a choice between the proverbial "rock and a hard place".

Our whole political system needs revamping. And I, for one, am not stopping at the praying stage. I will actively seek to change things in future elections. It is my duty as a contributing member of this society.

For what it's worth,
