I'm still in my 20s and won't be seriously contemplating retirement for another 30 years. But I know that for my wife and me to enjoy financial freedom in our later years, I have to start thinking about that future and planning for it now.
I hope Congress respects my desire to take responsibility for own future and will give me some ability to manage my Social Security investment. I'd like to see a program like President Bush has been talking about -- one that would let me set aside some of my Social Security in a personal savings account to be invested. No one should be forced to participate in such a program without guaranteed returns, but I shouldn't be forced to depend on the government's dubious financial management record, either.
I'm going to be paying into Social Security and supporting the retirement of older workers for many years to come. I just want Congress to give me an opportunity to have a little control over what I get out of the deal.

I'm in my 30's and would also like some control over the money that is coming out of my paycheck in the form of social security tax. Especially since I've been told for years that those funds are being used to pay for current social security recipients and that nothing will be there when I get to retirement age.
I think we should put partisanship aside here and truly address this issue. I don't agree with everything Bush has said, but I don't think the people on the other side of the aisle should throw the baby out with the dishwater simply because they can't stand to see anything the Bush administration proposes succeed. And politics are more partisan now than I can ever remember. And both parties are guilty.
All I'm really saying is that if I'm going to be paying for something, I should expect something for it. Especially when it is called Social 'Security'.

I would love to have a personal account. it would be much better invested in the private market. i know people say enron, tyco, bla bla bla but at one time they made money as a company. if my facts are correct the govt. has made money only 2 years in the past 50. ha ha ha now thats good management. Don't depend on social security! Whether or not we are able to invest a portion is really moot here. Either way will not bring good gains to the system. Start an IRA or some other retrement account. Depend on that, not our crooked, broken government.
