It seems to me that the various bills proposed to pump up North Carolina driving license documentation create a perfect storm of alien abuse wherein post-9/11 hysteria meets economic xenophobia meets sniffy inchoate racist NIMBYism.
When leaders like state Sen. Phil Berger of Eden sense political opportunity to propose a "get-tough on anything that can't fight back" bill, we are assured of tortured legislation that nips away freedoms at the margin.
We contented current Carolinians will not feel a thing as we close the door on the next wave of our fellow immigrants. We can feel smug and safe as we motor past the road crews or follow our bellies out of the restaurants and produce stands which depend on workers who do not have driving licenses.

Oh Donald - my aren't we blind. If you will simply look at the number of a certain group of immigrants and how they are doing in school you will understand that all we are creating by allowing them here are a plethora of uneducated people who are mass producing themselves in our country in order to become the new majority in a matter of 20 years. The freedoms that you mentioned are our freedoms not their's. I for one support anything that will limit the amount of tax money that comes out of my paycheck to support anyone who can't support themselves. Their freedoms are back where they came from. It is God Bless America not Norte Americana.

Donald - you current Carolinans (and this former one) are not closing the door on anything except illegal immigrants. As I posted in a similar forum, if they want to come live in the US and be given a chance at the opportunities that exist in this country, LET THEM DO IT LEGALLY. The heart of the matter, as I understand it, is illegal and 'undocumented' immigrants. It's not hard to become a legal citizen, or at the very least a legal alien. Why give licenses (and thus open the door to law enforcement action, state-funded heatlhcare, etc, if the need ever warrants) to those who choose to cheat the system? The system exists for a reason. Your immigrant ancestors and mine did it the proper way. All I want is for these 'new waves' of immigrants to do the same. That's only fair, wouldn't you think?

Mr. Gillepie,
I opined to another letter and felt as though I couldn't resist posting it to your letter as well.....
How can we even ATTEMPT to enforce immigration laws if we reward those who violate them so frequently? I personally feel that if an illegal alien is found in this country they should automatically be deported and sent back to their home country or point of departure. The very least that we should demand from anyone coming into this great land of ours is that they respect our laws and customs. If it takes them 5 years to get the appropriate paperwork....so be it....that's the price to pay to become a citizen in the most prosperous and powerful nation in the world.
If they are able to come into our country, and have the same PRIVILEDGES as any citizen then we really have no deterrent when trying to keep them out. Now I know someone is going to try and make the argument, "Well they are already here and the licenses are great when trying to identify them." Well, we all know they are here and anybody who goes to Wal Mart can readily see this; however, they MUST respect our laws and we must enforce them at the same time. You cannot choose when and when not to enforce laws and to think otherwise is ridiculous. And by the way, if someone refuses to identify themself when picked up by the police (example)...they should be detained for 30 days so ample time is allowed for research. If no fruitful information is found and the person still refuses to cooporate they should be turned over to federal officials.
And to Mr. Gillespie, why SHOULD they be allowed to take jobs from American CITIZENS and have the PRIVILEDGE of having a driver's license to get to and from work? I personally feel that they should have to answer to all of the regulations like me. You sir, are in favor of an open-border and need your head examined. Please realize that you have taken a pretty dangerous stance in regards to national security and the entire American economy. There are THOUSANDS of illegal aliens in our public school system that can't speak a word of English. This is ridiculously hard on the teachers and is a major factor when looking at school over population. It cost the American taxpayer millions of dollars to hire ESL teachers and to build new schools. Please tell me how this is fair to the American CITIZENS?
P.S. Let us keep in mind that the last time the US soccer team played a certain Hispanic soccer team in their home country they began to chant, "Osama bin Laden!" I personally don't give two hoots in a rain barrel about what they want anymore after that little tirade. If an entire soccer stadium wants to chant something that inflamatory and feel 'good' about it then they should be able to deal with wooden shacks, dirty water, over population, high unemployment, and corrupt politics just fine on their own. Don't expect any sympathy from us since we are the ones that lost 3000 people due to the jackass they are praising.........

Inchoate? Nimbyism? Xenophobia? At the Margin?
Let me guess.......English Major. Come on, I gotta be right. Cause I can't understand a dang word you are saying, man.
And if I can't understand you, you can be very assured that the next illegal immigrant isn't.
How much money are you making off of illegal immigrants, Mr. Gillespie? Because anyone who supports rights for people who are breaking American laws by being in our country has got to be making money off of it.
Either that, or they're just a blooming, over-educated idiot.

Encountering those ten-cent words can be an uncomfortable experience for some, ms jackson. So I can certainly understand why you chose to rip Gillespie a new one rather than thoughtfully respond to his argument.
Ignorance may be bliss, but a little quality time with a dictionary wouldn't hurt you.

Roger,
I bet people who read my post understood every word I said without having to pick up a dictionary. Why would I bother thoughtfully responding to something I can't understand. I'm not stupid. Which is why I'm not going to spend my time looking up words in a dictionary to respond to someone who obviously likes to blow wind out of his ass. By the way, every word I used today is in the dictionary.

Thank you for your lyrical response, ms jackson. You're right - why resort to understanding and reason when venom feels sooooo good?
Since you're acquainted with the dictionary, do us a favor and point out which big words are out of bounds. We wouldn't want to harm you by writing anything you might not understand, and posting it anywhere you might see it. If you warn us, we'll have only ourselves to blame when you spew without thinking.
