« Blame lies with media on SUV crash reports | Main | City's image problem comes from its denial »

Shootings an event then but not now

I have been following the 1979 shootings story with wonder and amusement. Having lived through it I find it amazing that this is our only claim to fame. It was an event then; it is a non-event now.
I have a memory of a CBS reporter standing at the top of Friendly Avenue with the Jefferson-Pilot Building in the background, describing Greensboro as a town tensely divided. It was false then and is false now.
To compare life in Greensboro with apartheid in South Africa is pretentious and ridiculous. Prior to this series of articles, and excepting anniversaries, I know of no one who has had any interest in this relic, the possible exceptions being the Communist Workers Party and the Ku Klux Klan

Very true! None of my friends, black/white, rich/not-rich, left/right/moderate have ever talked about this event since the trials took place. Is it because we are avoiding it or hope that the memory will vanish? No, it's because we have the ability to move forward--mindful of, yet not stuck in the past.

Timothy, You display a thoughtful insight into this whole nonsense being passed off as being necessary to the healing of Greensboro. To me it would be no different than me drudging up all the misery and abuse during my marriage. I have been happily divorced for over twenty-six years and I cannot think of one productive reason to remind myself of that horrible period of my life. I found the only way to move foreward was to get rid of the chains of anger that kept me riveted in the past.

The community of Greensboro should stand stead aganist those who want to drag them into a "picking of the scabs off old wounds". If healing really is their agenda, they need to leave those scabs alone.
