I stopped my subscription to the News & Record in the fall of 2004, after growing weary of the constant anti-Republican, anti-conservative and anti-Bush tone of this publication. After reading the editorial of June 11 on the News & Record Web site, I was reminded why.
Your hit-piece on the career of former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms was a cheap shot, not only to Mr. Helms himself, but to the majority of North Carolinians who sent him to represent them as their senator in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990 and 1996. Your editorial proves once again how out of touch your paper is with the mainstream of Tar Heel voters who continue to send conservative Republicans to the U.S. Senate.
One good thing did come from my canceled subscription to the News & Record. I will spend the money saved by purchasing a copy of Jesse Helms' recent book, "Here's Where I Stand." How ironic, that the money that could have been going to this liberal newspaper will end up buying the book of a conservative icon.

It is so amazing at how many posts and Letter's to the Editor that I see at the N & R online site who state that they have cancelled or are cancelling their "hard copy" subscription to the N & R. While these cheap skates continue to read the "free" online version, they still want to bash it. Yet they cancel their "hard copy" paying subscription.
It is just me or does anyone else see an irony here? It is not just irony either, cany any spell h-y-p-r-o-c-r-i-s-y?

"cany any spell..." Cany any Darryl spell is the question.

Lighten up, Yellowdog. Maybe Darryl can spell but just can't type.

Spending any money on a Jessie Helms book seems wasted to me. Glad he's gone!

Mad Dog, thanks for that word. However, considering the source, attacking a person is not out of the ordinary!

Jessie Helms,
I remember the name. Didn't someone drive a stake through his heart... no wait a minute, I remember. They tried but they couldn't find it.

I always find it interesting that liberals take cheap shots at Conservatives, but if the same thing was said of Bill Clinton or Ted Kennedy, they would scream about how mean spirited and heartless (see above) the conservatives are .... yet when you truly look at Sen. Helms record , a man who had the support of the Dali Lama, who was received accolades by all the Senate employees on numerous occasions as the man they liked to work for, who led a standing ovation for Madeline Albright, you find a man who stood by his convictions, whose record has been grossly distorted or taken out of context. Keep it real

Yeah Marshall, they did drive a stake through his heart. Then they got a pig valve and repaired it. Of course, that valve was a familial donation so they didn't have to go to too much trouble to find it.
All of you ultra-conservatives don't worry about Jesse leaving us for good. They are making advances in cloning and stem-cell research. You'll see him on the senate floor again. Oh....wait.....you might not since most ultra-conservatives are opposed to those things.
Just havin' fun wif ya!

"It is just me or does anyone else see an irony here?"
Darryl, believe me there is no irony. I to canceled my delivery well years ago and yes you see me here. However I only stop by to the Letter's to Editor page whenever I need a good laugh. The line of thinking of some of my fellow citizens is just too funny. I now understand why Guilford County was someone like Skippy Alston as a commissioner.

So then Patricia, I take it that you are still in favor of the N & R? If not, then why even read ANY aspect of it online?
If it is bad enough for you to cancel your "hard" copy subscription, why even bother with the online version, regardless of whether it is just one section. By going to even that one section, it appears that there is still interrest. And usually, one needs to go through the "Front Page" section to get to the "letters" page. So then, news is seen, whether read or not.

Also, just reading the online "letters" section is like the old quip with guys only buying "Playboy" for the articles.

I cancelled my subscription because of a very unfair article written about a friend of mine. He's in prison for life now. News & Record just published what the DA spoonfed them.
The reason I continue reading is because it is FREE.

Darryl
In answer to your question since obviously you didn't get it the first time: I read them every so often just to get a laugh at some of the ideas from my fellow citizens, those same citizens who really believe that bond money is free money and never has to be paid back (not even going to get into interest payments).
Maybe for you you have to go through the front page, I however have the letters to the editor paged saved. So no I don't even see the front page headlines. Unlike you I do not need to get my news from a slanted liberal paper who rarely focuses on local news and who feels the need to "feed me" the news instead of just reporting it.
