The term 'American Taliban' fits whom best?

In the usual congenial spirit of conservatism, Thomas Moore (letter, "Democrats' rhetoric is an embarrassment," June 22) lists the names of seven Democrats and dubs them the "American Taliban."

The reason: They dare to criticize the war in Iraq.
This makes sense. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, they encouraged criticism of the government, didn't they?

Conservative Republicans and the Taliban both oppose abortion, support capital punishment, condemn gays and believe that political leaders should pass a religious test.

And just as Muslim clerics control their followers, some Republican ministers order their parishioners not to vote Democratic on pain of expulsion. Nor are these beliefs merely peripheral; they are central tenets of each group.

So, based on doctrinal similarities, who has earned the label "the American Taliban"?

Terrance McConnell
Greensboro

oh boy - I predict a hornets nest grown here ....

BTW - it's been said the Watergate Break-in would be legal under today's Patriot Act guise of National Security. Since the FBI probably already has me on the watch list (because I'm clearly an unpatriot), I'll refrain from further comment for now.

You go Terrance! Hope you have a thick skin cause you are in for a hellava verbal beating. But be comforted in the fact you spoke the truth, popular view or not.

Greensboro City Council?

I don't remember who won this year, but I know Fantasia won last year.

Wow, still no opposing views?

Dough,

There are opposing views. But I think they all got hashed out on that letter from the other day with 120 responses.

I know that people love to dig their teeth into a good political argument, but I think the whole 'Republicans are evil/Democrats are great' and "Democrats are evil/Republicans are great' issue is old, boring, and done.

American taliban? Opposing aborition (the slaughter of innocent unborn),supporting the death penalty(supporting the idea of making damn sure that someone who rapes and murders a child never gets the chance to do it again). If that is what you mean by "american taliban" count me in.However I prefer to attach the "american taliban"label to those among us who truly support the enemy of our country: Ted Kennedy, Patrick Leahey, and Grand Kleagle of the KKK, Robert Byrd. And who can forget Dick Durbin?
I have never heard of a consetavite republican calling for the ban on women voting,or chopping off the hand of someone who steals a piece of bread. Mr.McConnel's coments are born of either ignorance or hate for the majority of the people in this country. I suspect a little of both.

truth, I agree. That was some board!

I've only been involved in these conversations for a couple of weeks, but already I am starting to discern when people are making real points and when old arguments are being rehashed.

Some people are open to an honest exchange of facts and opinions, and some aren't (which can get old).

Speaking of that board with the 121 comments, Joe Pesci made the last one! Check it out in the archives.

122 now, thanks to Tater.

That's the one where Feel The Love made a great play on Trish's comment. I think his humor may rival yours, steve!

truth said: " think the whole 'Republicans are evil/Democrats are great' and "Democrats are evil/Republicans are great' issue is old, boring, and done."

You are correct truth, and I agree with you. However here we have Mr. McConnell making a statement about Republicans discouraging criticism of the government. What I would like to ask Mr. McConnell is where was he when the Democrats were attacking Republicans for their criticisms?

When the Republicans voiced their criticisms of a sitting President, they got called "vast right-wing conspiracy", "rightwing attack dogs" and so on and so forth. Also these aren't terms from everyday citizens, these came from the leadership of the Democrat party. I have yet to hear Laura Bush claim there was a "vast left-wing conspiracy" or hear Frisk say "those horrible mean attack leftwing media and talk radio". Lesson learned: When the republicans criticize a democrat President that = bad, however when the democrats do it that = patriotic.

Secondly what Durbin said was about Gitmo, not the war, and what he did was plainly state that our military were no better then Nazis, Pol Pot and Stalin. He basically took the suffering of millions of people and demeaned them. Take a minute and think about that Mr. McConnell. Millions of people in the killing fields, millions more in the gas chambers, and millions more in the gulahs and yet not one person has died at Gitmo.

Thirdly, no person in the Republican leadership has called for his censure. Oh they did come out and ask Durbin to apologize (very weakly at that) but they did nothing like the democrats did to Trent Lott. Oh and Lott did the honorable thing and stepped down. (Even though his comments were made at a private function, honoring someone and not on the floor of the US Senate accussing our military of atrocities).

Trish. Best post yet.

Dang girl....awesome.....

I think I'm in love! LOL!

Might be up to 123 now.

Comparing the republicans to the taliban? Tell me Mr.Mcconnel, Are you proud that Ted Kennedy and his ilk has cost american lives? By harping on how the "Gulags" are run by american nazis and calling for them to be shut down, do you believe this improves or diminishes the moral of our enemies? Dick Durbin is a coward who backpeddeled on his nazi statments after he began to feel the heat from the voters in his home state. Don't tell me it was those onery republicans that made him ammend his statments, He could give a rip less what the republicans think of him. As for the chappedequic(spelling?) kid, the only reason he heasn't backed down is because appearently he feels he can fool all of the voters in Mass. all of the time.Appearently he is right. And where is your queen bee Hillary? Pretty quiet on that front. Setting the stage for a run in 08,perhaps? She dare not speak out about how she really feels about the military at this point. Point is, the dems with the big mouths are the ones in the "safe" districts and have little worry about being voted out of office. The others are cowering in their shadows. All Ted Kennedy does is sit around on his rather large bottom and harp about how we need to bring the "international community" on board in this war on terror. Translation: We need to let the embezzeling Kopi Annan handle our national security for us.
I wonder how much farther along the road to being a true demoracy Iraq and the rest of the middle would be if it wern't for the liblerals in this country offering the terrorists aid and comfort at every turn?

Dang Straight Yard Dog!

ya know, I consider myself to be all over the map politically, and I occassionaly go over the top for "shock value" (which usually backfires anyway) - but some posts in the N-R Blogs are down right loud and nasty - blowing statements way out of porportion, and exploiting for personal ego or political gain. If the shoe fits ...

JDR,

It used to not be this way. Yes, we had our disagreements and got snippy at times. But this whole blog has degenerated into near worthlessness.

Those were the days before the guerilla warfare we have now where people are running around changing their usernames 10 times a day to post nasty attacks.

How do you hit a moving target? You don't, that's how. It's a childish, chicken-shit move.
I did it myself once. Now I know what it looks like, I won't do it again.
