After a few days in Beijing, Rosemary Roberts has pronounced that China is absolutely no threat.
Based on the Pentagon's annual report on the status of China's military, China continues to concentrate forces and develop long- range missiles, jets and warships intended as a challenge to U.S. hegemony.
According to the report, in the "next several years," China will deploy the DF31 mobile, solid fuel ICBM and the JL2 submarine-launched ballistic missile, as well as continue to streamline and mobilize the People's Liberation Army, now numbered at 2.5 million. Between 650 and 730 mobile short-range missiles are now stationed in range of Taiwan, together with 700 aircraft. China continues to modernize its air and naval forces.
Advanced precision offensive and defensive weapons appear to be taking on a new priority. Two new guided missile destroyers, equipped with advanced anti-ship cruise missiles and air defense systems, are deployed with the East Sea Fleet, and two more have been ordered. Diesel submarines are in serial production, and the Chinese navy's first nuclear attack sub will be launched this year.
However, it is comforting to see Roberts step off the plane waving a paper proclaiming, "Peace in our time."

I with you, Ed. We'd better all learn to speak Standard Mandarin.
Actually, all "they" gotta do is stop supplying the USA with standard 1/4" bolts - such a simple part is universal to America, and arguably the loss of supply would temporarily cripple us. Go to Lowes and find a non-China made screwdriver. Now let's talk Motherboards. The list goes on.
But rather, let's discuss over and over that poor girl in Aruba. (I'm not diss'ing her, just commenting on the overall lack of focus on America's future.) For added "proof", over the next couple days I challange this set of bloggers to discuss this writer's letter more than whether there were WMD's in Iraq.

I do not fear the Chinese military. What I fear is the Chinese manufacturing capability. In the Thursday July 28, 2005 N & R, there was the announcement of yet another furrniture plant closing. Again, the inability to compete with Asian imports.
China, within five years, will be able to take over America without ever having to fire a shot. They will own us economically. The Chinese will buy up US debt and then come collecting. We will not be able to pay. So, for everyone who buys furniture, check the "made in" tag. If it is anywhere other than USA, think twice before another purchase.

You guys are correct. We are selling our souls and our nation to the Chinese in the name of "free trade" and corporate profits.
Like you have said, one day the Chinese will grow tired of their third world status. Maybe we can sue them if they threaten us? We still seem to be able to manufacture lawyers in this country.

Rosemary Roberts is nothing but a anti-American left-wing extremist who believes we bring everything on ourselves. How can the U.S. or the UN ignore the military build-up in China. The same thing was happening in Nazi Germany in the 1930's while the Europeans sit by and did nothing. Since WWII, China has taken over Mongolia and Tibet while the world sat back and allowed these peaceful people to be subjected to communist rule. Taiwan will be next. If we truly are trying to spread democracy, then why are we not supporting more strongly one of the few democratized nations in Asia. We should recognize Taiwan as a independent nation and give them full support as we would any other democratic country. As far as the Chinese imports go, I have been pushing "BUY AMERICA" for 20 years to no avail only to be called an isolationist and a nutcase. I sure of one thing after 20 years--all the people who have lost their jobs probably wish they had not shopped at Walmart and the rest of the Chinamarts. The chase for lower prices has run jobs out of this country along with the free trade policies our government has been pushing the past 20 years. The furniture market is the latest in the rush to de-industrialize our country. Great Britain tried this in the 1970's and ruined their economy with the so-called service industry. The only way a country can create wealth is with a value-added economy---One which takes raw materials costing a few cents and creates a multi-dollar end product. Factory jobs will always pay a better wage than working in the service jobs that are being created. There was a huband and wife interviewed at the new Walmart Supercenter in Eden who said they were glad about the 1000 jobs Walmart was bringing to Rockingham County. I do not see how these part-time barely above minimum wage jobs can help our economy especially when you factor in the loss of other businesses who cannot compete. The local businesses are the ones who truly insest in the community not the big box monstrosities.
We are the ones financing the miltary buildup in China through our purchases. If you are buying chinese goood, then you are costing Americans their jobs and supporting the Chinese government who owns all the industry in their country in some way direct or non-direct. May God have mercy on our children and grandchildren if this trend continues!

Unfortunately, Ms. Roberts chooses to remain in the "dark ages" by consistently touting the "party line". Were she truly in touch with reality, she would realize that BOTH parties are representing the ones who finance their campaigns instead of the ones who voted them into office. Sadly, these are also the ones who are more determined to serve their own interests than those of their constituency. When Ms Roberts returns from seeing the "China" that was shown her and making assurances that no one in our government can make, I am forced to decide between two conclusions: 1) Ms. Roberts has lost her objectivity and, therefore, her validity as a journalist. Her statement reflects the same naiveté ¤isplayed by Lord Chamberlain. She is far too experienced, talented and educated to portray such wide-eyed innocence. 2) She's trying to sell us, the readers, that she is a "political insider" who will, one day, earn the rewards that the "Political Elite" bestow upon those that are positioned to report what the "Elite" want us to know.

Well this one's about to archive - I can only sadly report - with the sixth post - this set of bloggers was much less interested in discussing this writer's letter more than whether there were WMD's in Iraq.
and now, back to inportant things - lets see, it's day 62 since that cute southern gal has been missing on Aruba. I'll bet Larry King has a meaningful update ....

Understand the Chinese have an answer for terrorists. Isolate them and kill them. Just like they do their political prisoners. Maybe that's why they are building up their military. Obviously, they show no remorse. Let Mohammad set off a bomb in Tienneman Square. See how fast he and his terrorist cell mates are rounded up and disappear.
Did Rosemary Roberts ask to see that side of the Chinese? Would she approve, like she seems to approve of everything else they have done?
