I feel it is very inappropriate to have a large story about beer on the front page of the Life section (June 29), only two days from a Fourth of July weekend.
I knew two young Christian people who were killed by drunken drivers in two separate tragedies. One had a very young baby boy.
Do you ever consider how much of an impact this makes on our young people? We all know alcohol is a drug, whether it is wine, beer or liquor. I hope you will reconsider next time such inappropriate promotion of alcoholic beverages.

As much as I love Patrick Egan, they hired him to tell us where the best places are to get smashed. Not to worry, they use Allen Johnson as his designated driver (Allen waits in the car, soda in hand, editing the blogs from his laptop to remove the hecks and darns).

I wonder why Mr. Setzer felt the need to say his knew 2 "Christian" people? Does he think being Christian makes them worth more? If they were Christian, isn't he celebrating their deaths, since he believes (presumably) that they're in heaven? I don't get it...

I wondered about that too Eric. I guess the intent was to put more value on their lives through a lable. If they were Jewish or Bhuddist, I guess it would of been less of a loss in his opinion.

This man only knows two christian people who were killed? I know about ten or more who have been killed by drunk drivers. It would seem the shortage of christians can be traced to drunk drivers. I guess that leaves more room for us pagans.

I wondered the same thing.. those "christian" lives were worth more than anyone elses?
Guess what Mr. Setzer? Alcohol is legal. In my opinion, the majority of the law makers in this state are drunks, so they keep THEIR drug of choice legal. They don't care if you're a "christian" or not, and frankly neither do I.
A human life is a human life, why put labels on them as if they somehow were better than any other people killed by drunk drivers?
I wonder how many "christian's" have gotten into their cars after a little "celebration" and driven drunk? I'm sure there are statistics, I just don't know how to go about obtaining them.

FLASHBACK!! Sometime in the mid 60's, the News Record started running ads for liquor..I was mailboy/relief switchboard operator at the paper and you wouldn't believe the nutcases like the writer of this letter calling blaming the paper of 'killing good christians and children' by running these ads. I see things haven't changed. Guess bornagains are anti-beer as well as anti-joy and anti-freedom. I think the writer of this letter needs to get a real life.

Lilly brings up a good point. How many "good" christians have jumped in a car drunk and killed another "good" christian? I guess the writer believes that only non-christians drive drunk.

So some guys get together and talk about making homebrew and all the sudden they are evil Christian killers. Worse yet the N&R promotes such evil behavior by running a story.
Perhaps the N&R should stop featuring recipes in the Wed. Life section that are too fattening, that could kill too. No more advertisements for cell phones, they are deadly as well. Get a life Mr. Setzer.

In defense of Mr. Setzer, we don't know why he said Christian. Maybe he was trying to use that to illustrate that the folks that were killed were innocent bystanders to a drunk driver. I can't believe so many people want to pounce on Mr. Setzer while ignoring the real culprits: drunk drivers.
In our overly sensitive world, the use of the word Christian by someone who is probably over the age of 70 raises ire more than the idea of folks driving while blitzed.
That is sad.

I was offended by that story, too, but only because I hate beer snobs, and especially those who want you to sample their latest odious concoction. The article noted the "diversity" of the group. What a laugh. A diverse group of white, upper-middle class, male clowns who think it's a good idea to flavor beer with strawberries. Please, N&R, don't gratify these people by publicizing their ridiculous hobby. We are nearing the end of civilization fast enough as it is.
