« Compassion isn't 'liberal' or 'misguided' | Main | Muslim imams should endorse our principles »

Homeowners can kiss their rights goodbye

Thank you, Tom Kirkman III of High Point, to others who have written letters to the editor, and to Paul Donohue for his excellent column in the July 3 paper about home ownership and "the American Dream."

With the U.S. Supreme Court's decision allowing private property to be acquired by another private owner, it appears that "the American Dream" is becoming a nightmare for those who are forced to sell their private property for the personal gain of someone else -- under the guise of a "benefit to the community." (There are many ways to benefit communities, but this should not be one of them.)

The Supreme Court has taken another step in removing individual rights in this country. Start saying goodbye to these rights, folks, because they are leaving us and going away at a rapid pace.

"The Supreme Court has taken another step in removing individual rights in this country."

Absolutely not! They are not taking our rights from us. They can't. It's impossible to do. Rights are inherent within us; therefore, they can be neither taken from us nor granted to us.

What government does is violate our rights. We can stop them from doing this at any time. There are two ways to stop them:

1) quit electing people who wish to violate our rights because they believe themselves to be our masters and elect freedom-loving public servants

or

2) overthrow the current government.

I prefer number one. Let's do it. Vote Libertarian.

I'm switching to Libertarian myself, I think both parties are now controlled by narrow minded, special interest fanatics. I'd prefer option #1 myself, but I bet we get to option #2 first as ong as our leaders have the "let them eat cake" mentality.

More decisions like these from our Supreme Court and the terrorists WILL have blue eyes and speak English.

Paul Donahue is DA MAN yo. You are right again, "truth"... they will.

Sitting in Air Conditioned office, drinking my Diet Pepsi and being affirmed by Lilly once again. Life IS good.

I would like all of the readers of this forum to know that I received a letter today from steve.

He has been booted from this website. When he went to comment on a letter, he received the message “you are not allowed to comment".

It seems the N&R nazi’s have banned Steve from posting because he got under their skin.

Sue, you got your way. Steve is gone. Hope you are happy. Allen will sleep better tonight, won’t he?

With Steve goes the freedom to post what you think. Steve’s opinions were sometimes controversial and his humor was often dark and dry, but it was intelligent. That’s why I liked it so much.

But Steve didn’t play the game. He didn’t stick to cookie-cutter responses. And SOME people (you know who you are) can’t stand to argue with someone they can’t outsmart. They can’t stand when someone has an opinion that differs from their own and can defend it. That might mean questioning their own views. So, they misuse their power and influence to get their way. Anything can be justified to smash out individuals who dare confront their insecurities and weaknesses.

Whatever it takes, huh?

You can hide behind words, you can hide behind power, but you can’t hide from the truth.

You can just ban him.

LET MY PEOPLE GO!!
How awful for steve.
Wanna wager on who will be next? *muhuhuhuhuha*

We'll see. If they want to do me a favor..................

Well "truth" if they ban YOU, what will I do with myself?
Oh Romeo where for art thou? I can see me saying it already.. *sigh*

There are a lot of blogs out there, Lilly. If it is fate, we will meet again (sniff sniff)

...Uh, what's to stop anyone from taking on a new personna?

Nothing but an IP address I would imagine.

Then thank goodness for low-tech!

I'll say.

Paul, I agree with you that we should vote the bums out of office who violate our rights. But,I have a small problem with the "vote libertarian" comment. They never win elections. I have voted for libertarian canidates for governor, lt.gov,etc. To them garnering 8-10% of the vote is a major victory. Just seems a wasted vote. Kinda like voting for an independant canidate. You could argue that people do it to make a statement or "send the politicans a message", but after election day has come and gone the message is gone. And at the end of the day we are stuck with the same old system. So I end up voting for the lesser of the 2 evils. Not arguing here, just stating facts. What say you?

Yard Dog,

I say that your idea that you waste your vote by voting for who you truly want in office is precisely the way those in power want you to think. As long as you and everyone else continue to vote for the "lesser of two evils," guess what's going to happen...we're always going to have evil!

You say that one is a Lesser Evil. Let's let some numbers represent this. Suppose on the Scale of Evil that Greater Evil is rated at 100% and that Lesser Evil is rated at 95%. By voting for Lesser Evil, you're stating that you approve of 95% evil. Then suppose Lesser Evil wins and, well, starts doing his evil. You start to complain about it, and all he has to say is, "Hey, you voted for me. You must have wanted me to do this."

And so from now on, you have to put up with 95% evil, and you try to convince yourself that this is SO much better than if you had to put up with 100% evil.

But not really though, huh? Kind of makes you feel like you wasted your vote, doesn't it? Why not instead do what's right and vote for who you truly believe will be best?

You know what else? If you vote for an alternative like the Libertarian Party and then go out and proclaim it proudly, I guarantee you a lot of other people will begin to vote for alternatives also. You know why? Because they also are sick and tired of the status quo and bad government. And when they hear that someone they know is actually going to take a principled stand and say "No more," that encourages them to stand for a change also.

I've witnessed this firsthand. A Republican friend of mine, who is quite a stubborn person, told me that he voted for a couple of Libertarians last year for the first time after I'd repeatedly expounded up Libertarians' virtues. At first he was completely skeptical, of course, but then he started reading their web sites and listening to them in debates, and finally he said, "They do make some good points," and then voted for some of them.

Also, several people on this very blog have told me that they are either switching to Libertarian or are at least considering doing it. Just in the last two days, two people have said so. Furthermore, the number of registered Libertarians in North Carolina grew by 20% last year.

So you see, Yard Dog, all it takes is a little outreach. Dedicated, passionate outreach begets exponential growth. For every person you convince to join the cause, that person is going to go out and convince, say, three other people. Those three will each convince three other people, which equals nine new people. And so on.

We're not going to win a majority in Congress anytime soon. But we will start winning local elections, however, (we already do win some, actually), and we will continue to grow, and when we start getting 15-20% of the vote in major elections, we will actually impact policy even if we still don't hold office. And then we will actually beginning winning elections.

Won't you help continue the already-growing tide?

Join me in the fight for Liberty!

Paul, you're a really good county chair. God bless you sir.

Paul, you are right about your math, but if I remember correctly, It was around 1974 or maybe 76 (don't rip into me for having the wrong date) that I voted for the libertarian canidate for gov. I think at the time he/she received about 2%of the vote. Now they are up to 10,maybe 12%. An increase of 6-8% in 30 years. Also they may begin to win a few local elections in say, another 10,15,20 years? This may help with local property taxes (if there are any more private proerty),but the big boys in DC are still going to be calling the shots on things like supreme court justice nominees. This is where the real power lies.
Again,I am not arguing with you. From what little I have read of your writings here, you are a sincere and pasionate person, but that translates to very little in terms or real political power.
Now,given the choice of say,Ted Kennedy, Bill Frist,or an unknown 3rd libertarian canidate for president. I know the libertarian canidate has very little chance of sucess. So do I cast my vote for him (ie:vote for Kennedy) or vote for Frist, who at least has a chance of winning? As you have probably noticed ,I am no fan of liberal democrats. The "lesser evil" republicans at least support in SOME way to reduce taxes and nominate conservatives to the supreme court.

Yard Dog,

If you're only willing to vote L at the local and state levels right now, that would be great. That's how we want to do it anyway--from the bottom up.

So what's the deal with kicking Steve off? Where can we get both sides of THAT story?

JDR, you can't. Unfortunately it was a case of a very minute(one maybe 2) minority pressuring the powers that be and getting their way. The other side of the story has been banned.

JDR, you can't get both sides. Unfortunately the "other side" can no longer speak here. It seems that pressure brought to bear on the powers that be by a very tiny minority(1 possibly 2) has eliminated that option.
