I read Eric Madden's letter (June 10) about Bob Hinson being from Mayberry and his thoughts on having Andy Taylor-type values for the Guilford County Sheriff's Department. Of course, we know Mayberry is, in fact, Mount Airy, and Andy Taylor was a fictional character on "The Andy Griffith Show," but what caught my attention was the idea of having a helicopter for safety and security reasons, particularly after Sept. 11.
The rapid growth and size of Guilford County justify the need for such a vehicle. Doesn't Mecklenburg County have law-enforcement helicopters?
It sounds like Bob Hinson's intentions are to modernize the Sheriff's Department, and after all of the effort put into modernizing downtown, Guilford County will need this to take another step into the 21st century.

Golly gee, I never would have guesssed that. I thought that show was a 1960's version of Cops.
All that crime in Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Brown's Summit, Oceola, Stony Creek, Colfax, Pleasant Garden, Climax, Forest Oaks and Julian might just be the justification for the Sheriff to get himself one of them thar fancy helio-copters.

Yall think those places are bad. Visit Wake County sometime. The Sheriff there won't even let bail bondsmen conduct business in the jail lobby. You must do it in their car like a drug dealer.
Unless you are one of the Wake Co. Sherrif's "boyZ", you gotta conduct your business outside.
Best advice I have if going thru Wake County, is go thru, do NOT stop, do not SPEED, or they will collect a boatload of money from you if one of their "finest" decides to pull you over for any reason, or no reason at all.

The best way to modernize the sherriff's dept. is to do away it and replace it with a county police dept. The sherriff's salary alone would be a good savings to tax payers.

My comments about all of our low crime outlying communities was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.
Out in Osceola people take the law into their own hands.
