What has happened to this world in the last few years? Has it reverted to a sort of barbarism? As Christianity has declined, rudeness and violence have increased. Neighbors quarrel with neighbors. Fighting is a major problem in our schools, and the gang wars of teenagers have come to present a serious problem in our cities.
Fathers and mothers wrangle and bicker with each other. Homes are disintegrating. High government officials in Washington engage in name-calling and in heated disputes not at all in keeping with the dignity of their office.
Why and how has all this savagery crept into our social life? It is because we have forgotten Jesus' words, "Happy are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Happy are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." The mercy the world needs is the grace, love and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is His transforming and regenerating power that the world needs more than anything else.

You rely on books written over 6 decades after Jesus' death for faith? Surely the stories in the bible are a bit fabricated, as are most stories that are told nearly 70 years after the fact.

These fanatics like the writer of this letter live in their own little twisted 'brain-clouded' world. Don't know which reaction is most appropriate, laughter, pity or fear

Tony, How do you know the books of the NT were written over 6 decades after Jesus' death?
Posted by ECUMAN | July 11, 2005 11:10 AM
Ecuman,
Briankeithharper said that, not Tony. Tony labeled the letter-writer a fanatic because he stated some positive principles.

If I remember correctly, most biblical scholars place the authorship of Matthew, Mark and Luke sometime around 70 AD, give or take 10 years or so. That's only about 40 years after his death. John is later -- around 90 or 100 AD. Paul's letters are earlier, some of them possibly dating to 50 AD or a bit earlier. So saying the NT was written over 60 years after Jesus' death is stretching it a bit.

Sorry for attributing Brian's comment to Tony. However Tony, why do you call Nick a "fanatic" and what is the definition of that word? Besides, ridicule is not an argument.

As much as I am against forced religion, I feel that more faith and belief is needed in this country. Whether one wants to worship Christianity, Judaism, Muslem or whatever. Religion when used correctly is a good thing. Religions themselves do not teach hatred...but certain interpreters see hatred. It doesn't matter what religion you are!

bkh,
you wrote "Surely the stories in the bible are a bit fabricated, as are most stories that are told nearly 70 years after the fact." are you conceding that 'some' of the stories in the bible are not fabricated ? are any of the stories accurate ? if any of the stories are true and accurate, how do we determine which are and which are not ? are you saying that it is impossible for history to be accurately recorded 50 years after an event ?
for those who actually believe the bible as God's word to man, do so based on faith and the definition of faith is "the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen". as i see it, those who are seeking a relationship with the God of the bible, are given the advantage of being guided in its truths. while those who either have no interest in that relationship or simply choose not to believe, the bible can become problematic even to the point of seemingly contradicting itself. it is a book that is spiritually discerned. i respect your right not to believe but that will not stop me from petitioning God to continue to place His call to His people, offering eternal life. it is NOT my place to try to convince you or anyone of the existence of God, but it is my job to offer you the opportunity to believe. have a happy day !

Nick is right on. However, since Christians are as guilty of all the tragedy he writes about, perhaps those who beleive in Christ should heed his words.
Guys like Mr. Harper love to push our buttons. Even he would take note if he saw beleivers living as if all that Jesus taught were true. The homosexual community may have a different view of Christ if beleivers had treated them with respect from the beginning.

"The homosexual community may have a different view of Christ if beleivers had treated them with respect from the beginning."
From my experience, MOST believers have. Stereotypes suck, period.

Don't mess with the "truth".

read the following bible scriptures if any of you desire the truth concerning today's events
( IF YOU SO DARE !!! ):
Acts 28:26 Saying, Go unto this people and say, hearing ye shall hear, and not understand;and seeing ye shall see,and not perceive.
v27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Chip: Why are you so obsessed oe threatened by homosexuality? As for my fanatic comment, I believe that there are fanatics in all religions and all of them are scary. Those who feel a need to testify are especially scary. To me, there is little difference in christian fanatic and muslim fanatics. Remember when Bush started his little war he called them a crusade? Could being to mind christian fanatics of old who killed the infidels in the name of jesus. i agree with depak chopra...God gave us spirituality...the devil gave us religion
