This is in response to Frederick Nimer (letter, Aug. 7) and other anti-CAFTA people.
I am lucky enough to still work in the textile industry. I know this is a declining industry and that U.S. manufacturing in general is dying. I've heard people blame politicians for "giving jobs to foreign countries."
If the saying "all politics are local" has any truth, what are you going to do to help U.S. manufacturers? If you plan to wait until election time, it may be too late. May I suggest that you start buying products "made in USA" (or try to)? My family has, and quite frankly, it is hard. We do not shop at Wal-Mart. We do not shop lowest price. We know U.S. manufacturing employees need jobs, and we are willing to pay more.
If we all made it a priority to buy "made in USA" and stopped consuming all the cheap imports, maybe the Wal-Marts of the world would stop causing companies to chase cheap labor. Put your money where your mouth is and do something to help us. If nothing else, choose to buy from our democratic CAFTA friends over China.

Someone somewhere is doing your job for 1/4 the pay. The world market is buying form these individuals, bottom line.

I'd like to buy American, but how do you do that?
You think brands such as Wrangler would be American, wouldn't you? (Especially since they always appear in those Country music videos) Truth is that most of the work is done in Central America.
So where exactly do you shop where clothes are MADE 100% IN AMERICA?

Buying American is a WONDERFUL idea in principle. However, with so many people either unemployed or underemployed, their earning do not give them the opporturnity to "buy American."
The American people are the ones to blame for this mess. We wanted the lowest price for items while wanting the highest wages. Those two do not mesh very well.
So, no we have to figure out how to get out of this mess. With many family's struggling to meet their basic needs, the option to "buy American" just does not happen. What will we do?

I'm with Darryl on this - know what to do is an unknown.
On a regular basis I do write my Senators - they must be tired of me by now - and I boycott Wal-Mart, a company that is instrumental in this situation (80% of their products come from China).
I'm looking for better solutions ....

Writing to your senators is no longer a useful gesture. We do not live in a representative republic anymore. We are instead at the mercy of a two-headed kleptocracy that does what IT wants, and to hell with what is best for the people. If you want to make inroads with your senator, bring along a hefty campaign contribution... otherwise you don't count.

I just read a article by Farm Buerau that says this is great for NC. In my opinion it will be another NAFA. I may be way off, but everytime someone says it good, John Q Public gets screwed.

Christopher, I was going to write a comment about how cynical you were when I stopped to think for a moment about what you wrote.
Sadly, I must agree with you. It has always been a problem, but now more so than ever, it takes money to acquire influence.
Even for those of us who bother to vote, there is no way to know whether or not our vote was counted, or even recorded.
Bummed now,
Tony

Didn't mean to "bum you" Tony, honest :-) I like to think of myself as an optimist. As someone who believes that one way or another good always wins out in the end...
...but so help me, the older I get (I'm just 31 now) the more cynical I *am* becoming. There is little or no hope left for the America I grew up in to come back. There is DEFINITELY no hope we can expect from the more partisan quarters. America is, for all intents and purposes, no longer a democratically-elected republic, but a national socialism state by the strictest definition of the term.
I feel so bad for the next generation - and what they will inherit from us - that I have to wonder by what right do I have to bring a child into this world. That's seriously been haunting me, as bad as things are getting...

Christopher,
There will always be good and bad in the world. Don't let others rob you of your joy.
