"There are other places for cyclists to ride," Les McCaskill said (article, "Biking banned on sections of Bryan Boulevard," Aug. 10). That is fine for a relaxing way to spend an early Saturday or Sunday morning, but it is not so easy when you are trying to get to work.
"It is a safety concern," said Cpl. B.D. Dodd. His concern is consistent with conventional wisdom, but ride with me and see if you feel safer on the wide shoulders of Bryan Boulevard or along the narrow edge of Friendly Avenue.
It is said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Well? So is the road to Greensboro. I will ride by the law. Will you help promote bicycle safety by raising public awareness of bicycle commuters?

Who rides a bike to work?

I ride my bike to work and the guy that works in office next to me rides his bike to work. I ride for fitness and so I don't have to pay $2.55 a gallon for gas that helps support terrorism.

Mr. Boyd,
Will you promise to obey ALL traffic laws, especially signalling when changing lanes and refrain from running red lights when they don't suit you?

One person on a bike, in the city, in my opinion, is alot easier for motorists to deal with than a group 6 bikes wide out on a two lane country road.
Kudos to you who ride to and from your jobs each day. I promise you, I will always be on the look out for you, and watching out for you before I pass by.

Mr.Boyd, are you willing to do the following?
1.The vehicle must be licensed
2. The vehicle must pay the same tax as I do on my car
3.A test for cyclist be created and all riders must take and pass the test, plus a road test
4.That all cyclist must maintain insurance on their bikes as I do on my vehicle, plus collision with the same minimums as cars and trucks.
5. That all cycles must have a flag or flashing light attached so that drives will be more aware of them. Same as the motorcycle headlight law.
When you are willing to do those things then you will have the right to drive on tax supported streets. Please don't tell me you pay taxes. Do you pay road tax on your bike as I pay on my car?
Do you pay the tax, called a license plate?
Do you pay a tax called drivers license, remember motorcycle riders have a different test and so should bike riders.
Do you pay insurance to insure that if you are involved in an accident with another bike or with my car that you are able to pay for it, you vehicle and mine?

Interesting comments maddog and mrproduce. You are right that cyclist using the public streets are to follow the same general laws as cars. These laws are explained in the North Carolina Drivers Handbook. All vehicles are not the same (trucks, autos, cars, bicycles) and the laws reflect this. Cyclist that follow the law already have the right to public streets (see the Handbook). My cycling activity is covered by my insurance, and I pay all required taxes (and like you, I do not pay taxes that do not exist.) If more cyclist were responsible it would be safer for those of us who are. I saw a "tongue in cheek" comment that said 99% of lawyers give all the othere a bad name. Sometimes I think "cyclist" could be substituted for "lawyers" in that comment. Most auto drivers in Greensboro are very courteous and safe around cyclist. Most of the few who are not are likely just not aware. Thanks for watching out for me, with my blinking light, and my flag.
