The following is a Counterpoint column:
By Jon Caldwell
After reading the article in the Oct. 2 paper on the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission, I am left with nothing but confusion.
I don't understand what was being said or what is being reported upon. The only things I could gather were that the commission has held its final meeting and will be coming up with some recommendations soon.
Then it goes on to quote some people who have been involved in the process. The quotes they offer make absolutely no sense to me.
For instance, "You're never going to get healing, you're never going to get reconciliation, you're never going to get peace without justice" -- Rev. Carlton Eversley.
Can you tell me what this means? Can you put it in context for me? And what does Darryl Hunt have in common with communists from the '70s?
"This process still to this day serves not to empower but to disempower the very people in the society who are still powerless and struggling to attain some kind of power through collective action" -- Richard Koritz.
Translation, please. I swear I can't make out what he is saying. It is just a bunch of words strung together like a daisy chain.
And finally, my favorite of all: "One of the problems with white people is that even those with goodwill seem to be unconsciously white ... you've got to shock white people into their whiteness, I think" -- Rev. Carlton Eversley.
I don't even know where to begin with this one. It is dripping with contempt, racism and anger. And to think that this guy is preaching to a congregation in Winston-Salem. He is the black version of a Grand Wizard and doesn't seem to get it.
The writer lives in Raleigh.

Mr.Caldwell,I think I can translate some of those words for you. "You're never going to get healing"- "You're never going to get peace without justice"- "one of the problems with white people is....". All code words for "Show me the noney".
No one will ever convince me that the trc is about 'healing' and 'justice'. What do they expect to learn nearly 30 years after the fact? As if the events are still fresh in everyone's mind! Please! I think in addition to the desire for more cash, the trc also wants to keep the racial fires of discontent stoked in order for the black leaders to pass along their legacy of hatred for the white people. We can't have the black community live in harmony eith their neighbors now can we? It would put the reverend Eversley and his co-horts out of business. All in my opinion, of course.

And finally, my favorite of all: "One of the problems with white people is that even those with goodwill seem to be unconsciously white ... you've got to shock white people into their whiteness, I think"
Translation: All white people are racist even if they don't realize it. The only way we can change them is for them to admit they are racist, feel guilty about it, subscribe to our beliefs, and give us reparations.
You tagged it Jonniebgood: show me the money. These people are misery merchants who make a good living trying to keep blacks downtrodden.

Well said Johnnie.
Race baiters have truly duplicious motives.
There is an entire subculture of Black America that thrives and profits from race baiting. The more black folks are held in the bondage of poverty and despair the greater the rewards for the race baiters.
It's a disgrace to humanity.

The Rev.Eversley and the Rev. Johnson proclaim that they want healing for the community. Neither have even gone in the direction of healing by making such statements as both have made during this T&RC hearing period.
I can tell them how to at least start this healing but I am sure that they and many will disagree but I have seen it work.
If the Rev's wish to heal, each of them need to ask the white people of this community, the Nazi's and the Clan to forgive them for preaching hate and teaching others to hate and blame white people for what they did to them.
Let's hear it now, HE'S CRAZY! No, I can testify that it works.
I was recently at a gathering at Echo Mtn, in Asheville, NC at a seminar on healing, forgiveness , breaking down barriers, breaking chains of bondage etc. A very tall, stately, beautiful African woman stood and in her broken english and heavy accent turned to a young black woman and spoke these words; "Please forgive me and my people for selling you to slave traders and dividing your family and placing you in bondage for so many years. Will you forgive me?"
The young black woman with tears streaming down her face and her voice breaking turned to the African woman and spoke; "I had never looked at things this way in my live since I had always been taught that it was the white man who brought my family into slavery, I realize now that I was wrong in so many ways. Yes I forgive you."
She then turned to the white ladies at her table and to the white people and other races in the room and asked that they forgive her for hating and holding unforgiveness toward them. One after another people stood and asked each other for forgiveness. I stood and sought forgiveness for myself and my family in generations past, several who were ministers during the days of slavery in this country and who had stood silently by and allowed slavery and mistreatment of people to go on. I feel that forgiveness was offered and accepted.
If you don't think it works, try it sometime. The results you see may shock you.
You see , I believe what my God speaks when He said, "Forgive one another as even I have forgiven you." Forgiveness is the only way to find true healing, and peace.

"I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him." Booker T. Washington.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin L. King, Jr
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Mahatma Gandhi
If the TRC and those participating embraced the philosophy of these great men, they would be trying to mend bridges, not tear them down. They would be teaching and preaching love and the ways of Christ, not hatred and separatism. They would be promoting harmony between mankind, not strife and anger.

i can honestly say i havent paid much attention to any of the trc. and i live less than a third of a mile from where it happened. Honestly, the trc has tried to shove this down everyone's throat and get them choked up about it but i still see it from the history channel point of view...you take communists-nazis, kkk members and put them all in a black neighborhood. hmmmm lets see what happens. Their plan to make this "tragedy" widely known has had its effect. most of us know something about it. but can i get a show of hands from people who care?

It's like Lilly always said, when you hear of a "Death to the clan march", why would you be within five miles of the place it is to happen? People present that day made the choice to be there, whether out of curiosity, excitement or lack of common sense. If they are still suffering flashbacks and trauma after all these years, they need the help of professionals, not a commission. And they should accept enough responsibility to seek such help on their own.
All this bruhaha by the TRC is nothing more than trying to place the blame on ones who had no control over the situation, GPD. They also apparently like to stir the ashes of racism, encouraging blacks to hate whites. There are definitely some personal agendas at work here.

Mr. P.,
I'd really like to know more about the seminar in Asheville that you spoke of. It sounds amazing! Can you tell us more about who sponsored it, etc.?
Yvonne,
Amen! Love of Jesus, YES. Hatred and separatism, no!
Peace,
