Rice doesn't deserve Davenport's praise

In Charles Davenport's column on Condoleezza Rice (Nov. 6), she states the GOP sees her as an individual rather than part of a group.

Individualism is conservative code for only looking out for No. 1. Republicans equate conservatism with Christianity. Condoleezza Rice worships the "power of the individual." However, Christ did not operate as a lone ranger; he ministered with a group of 12 disciples. "If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it" (1 Corinthians 12:26-27).

Why is it acceptable for Dr. Rice to be 100 percent career and ambition, obsessed with proving that she can achieve everything alone? If she were a liberal, she would be maligned as a feminist.

What will conservatives do with Rice's statement on the Larry King show, "I am personally pro-choice"? Will she change her abortion stand to get the "Christian Right" group's endorsement?

It was amusing to see Rice attend the recent Birmingham civil rights commemoration since she opposed the civil rights movement. Could she be campaigning to get the black vote as a group for the presidency she claims she's not running for?

"It was amusing to see Rice attend the recent Birmingham civil rights commemoration since she opposed the civil rights movement."

News and Record Editor: Why do you allow misinformation and deceit to be printed without first doing research to prove their validity?

Condolezza Rice was 11 years old in 1965 when the Civil Rights Act was passed. Were NR reporters in Alabama investigating her point of view at the time? Condlezza Rice has said nothing about "opposing the Civil Rights movement".

I can only imagine that the NR editorial staff are as follows:

1.Bush Administration bashing liberals who seek to publish letters critical of the Administration.

Or

2. They are educated to the point of being hired but not educated enough to do legitimate research.

The history of this paper's Letters to the Editor tells me it's the former and not the latter.

The media resources available to the NR readers has increased exponentially over the past 10 years . Misstatements of fact, errors of omission and outright lies which make it through the editorial process are no longer safe from being unchallenged by the paper's readers.

Nationwide newspapers are losing circulation and laying off staff. With misinformation as was allowed to be printed in the above editorial it's easy to understand why.

hugh, help me understand something, please. I didn't think it was up to editors to review, edit, or fact-check these LTEs. Now, if it was a staff-written editorial, maybe. But this is a LTE. Doesn't the job of keeping ourselves straight belong to us?

You can bet if the letter was bashing liberals, it wouldn't matter if it were factual or not. Anything negative can be said about anyone who holds a liberal view and most of the conservatives who post here are on the sidelines cheering.

IMHO, Rice prostituted herself for the Bush administration initially and now that Bush is on the hot seat, she is abandoning ship (like a lot of republicans). I believe her distancing has "political aspirations" written in big, bold letters all over it.

She may be counting on the pubic to have a short memory (as she did when she stated Bush never suggested a link between Iraq and 9/11) but she is in for a rude awakening, imo. She has shown us she is not to be trusted. Do we really want another untrustworthy president?

Talk about Freudian slips, that should be PLUBIC, not pubic! LOL

I just can't get it right this morning. Let me try again. P-U-B-L-I-C, public, now that's right, I think. Still LOL.

Don't know what happened to my correction of my correction but here goes again. P-U-B-L-I-C, public, not pubic or plubic. Still LOL.

Cross posting from the NR Editor's Log where I left pretty much the same message as my earlier post here:

"So far as I know, Dr. Rice has not opposed the civil rights movement. The criticism she has received in that regard has been due to her alleged lack of sensitivity to, and appreciation of, that struggle. We should have edited that letter to reflect that. You are right, Hugh. We should have caught it."

The problem the liberals have with Ms. Rice is she is an independent thinker and doesn't rely on the likes of Al Sharpton and Jessee Jackson to speak for her. Nothing upsets their apple cart more.

I love when people evoke the name of Jesus for political gain. How about writing a letter telling your testimony about how you found salvation. I think that would be more pleasing to your Savior.

Neocon, the problem with Condi is she is black AND conservative. Ain't supposed to be that way, not supposed to leave the farm.

Ms/Mr Simpson's(hereinafter referred to as Simpson) is full of the tripe that I abhor. Why does the world have to bee seen in the narrowest of perspectives when talking abour religion, conservatives and liberals?

There are many, many conservatives, including me, Jews, Blacks, Indians, Koreans, Mexicans, Japanese and ethnic extractions from all over the world who do not equate conservativism with Christianity. There are a few loudmouths who do but they represent a distinct minority...just as most married liberal men would not put a young woman on her knees just because they could.

Don't understand at all the drivel about career and ambition. What is wrong with that. Too, I know what I would do with the pro-choice comment...ignore like most conservatives do since it is a moot point unless the Supreme Court changes it's ruling on the issue. Does the nature of this comment mean that Simpson will vote for her if she runs due to her pro-abortion stance?

Don't know about Rice's opposition to the civil rights movement but high ranking public officials, and she is one whether you like it or not, routinely attend all sorts things that have political overtones, either for themselves or their party. Not fair to assign your interpretation of the intent without some evidence.

Hugh I vote for #1
Yvonne, when has the NR published many letters bashing liberals???? I have questioned the NR about about very few letters to the editor written, from middle of the road to right. I was told the letters to the editor reflected what their readers wanted??????
Lets take a look at letter last week that said Bush was cutting medicare. This was e -mailed and mailing from a liberal politician seeking money. I asked the letter writer to show me the cuts. I got no response. I questioned why a scare letter, with no truth would be printed.Letters like this one serve no purpose but to scare the hell out of old folks.I no longer buy the NR, after 43 years, I quit, I expect a newspaper to print as best they can the truth. The NR carried the story about the teachers pay raise. They should have, however they left out the timing of this. The NEA membership is falling like a rock. They are consider to be lap dogs for the democrat party and not doing a thing for the teachers. The NR left out a comment by Tony Rand, if the teachers want to keep getting raises they most vote democrat. I question the NR, why the commment was not included in the article.Doug Clark admited that Rand had made this remark. I would call this vote buying with tax payers money. If you are left, right, are middle of the road, we need to quit fighting each other and try do whats best for our country and state. HOLD POLITICIANS RESOPONSISIBLE.The sad fact is we would rather fight each other and let the politicians laugh at us.

Dog, I only express my opinion like the rest of the folks who post here. If you do not agree with my opinion and take offense, how am I "fighting" you or anyone else who also disagrees? I want to get rid of the whole lot of them (dems and repubs) and start over.

Just because I know (because I heard her with my own ears) Condi lied to the American people and said so doesn't mean I want to fight you or anyone else. It simply means I do not like or trust the woman, period.

If you or anyone else has a suggestion as to how to help eliminate "the great divide", I'm listening. And I expect a fair, give and take plan, not an all or nothing one.

Yvonne,
Pray tell where I am fighting you??? I see no negative comment I made about your post. I only asked you a question. That you did not answer! I take no offense to anything that has ever been posted, I may in the future. I did make the statement we need to quit fighting each, but that was a general statement, not aimed at your post. We the taxpayer are the one getting screwed by our elected, self serving officals. If you watched Hannity and Colmes last night you saw how our tax dollars are spend on the federal level. I stick by my statement the NR is very pro liberal. As bad as this state is mismanaged, do you feel that every once in a while a letter would appear about this?? In case you did not know this NC is the 49th worst managed state, did you every read that in NR????
