Our Founding Fathers would be turning in their graves if they learned about the continuous and rapid erosion of freedom, liberty, constitutional civil rights, and human decency taking place in the United States of America.
This letter is to encourage readers, both Republicans and Democrats, to contact Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr. Ask Sens. Dole and Burr to vote against the continuation of the Patriot Act.
The U.S. Senate has the constitutional duty to protect us against a threat far more lethal than foreign terrorism. The threat is the internal attack by the Bush administration on traditional American values and civil liberties. This threat is further evidenced by the recent disclosure that President Bush approved spying on American citizens without legal authorization.
Please contact Sens. Dole and Burr immediately and ask that they vote against continuation of the Patriot Act.

You people moaning about the Patriot Act will be the one's screaming the loudest when the next 9-11 type attack occurs. It is not a coincidence that another attack of that sort has not happened since the Patriot Act has been in place. Not one person in this blog has had their lives noticably impacted the Patriot Act other than the prevention of an attack. At least you still have the right to be an idiot William.

William:
"Ask Sens. Dole and Burr to vote against the continuation of the Patriot Act."
Heh. I used to write to Sen. Dole, until I realized that her responses invariably indicated unwavering, unquestioning support for everything the President says. I would expect Burr to stand a little to the Right of Ms. Dole.

It's interesting that you assume there will be another 9-11 type attack in the future. Is this predicated in the assumption that the "Patriot" Act will be defeated, or that it will fail? Just wondering...

J.C., true we have not been affected..yet. Seriously doubt it can be proven that the Patriot Act has prevented another 9/11.

As with anything, the present cannot be assumed to be what it is had something else been done or not been done leading to the current state.
Those that say the Patriot Act has had an affect on preventing another 9-11 can no more prove their statement than those who say it has not had an affect. Similarily, those who say things would have been different had Gore or Kerry been elected can not prove their statements either. We are left only to ASSumptions... and there's an old adage about ASSuming.

And I am stating that if the Patriot Act continue on as is without changes at the least or with cesation at best, that the slippery slope created will have the USA in a situation that will be difficult end.
I am still amazed at how the Congress passed this "knee-jerk" legislation. If someone desires to talk about "fear-mongering" this is the prime example.
I agree with the LTE writer, regardless of how one feels, Dole & Burr's offices will tire of getting communication urging a NO vote on the legislation!

Carol Dunn,
Er, lady, had the Patriot Act been in place prior to 9/11 there wouldn't have been the Gorelick wall ( Clintons Assoc AG) and intelligence agencies could have exchanged actionable info with the FBI and prevented 9/11. Neitherou nor the other morons screaming so loud about the PA can't cite one instance of abuse since it's almost unanimous passage in 2001. Not even, OMG, even the library provision. Listen dipsticks ..the Patriot Act is your friend. Get over your silly hysteria.

Brian,
The act should be known as the "UN-Patriot" Act.
And before the Neo-con and the worm weigh in saying "hey, the Democrats voted for it too" let me add, I hold them ALL accountable! That's more than they can say.
It is a slippery slope when a President, intoxicated with power, begins to authorize wholesale wire taps without judicial oversight. That's right, wholesale wiretapping while at the same time telling the american people that he has broken no laws and he only wants to protect us! Does anyone remember when he tried to revive his slumping poll numbers by crying "Terrorist Alert, Terrorist Alert, Terrorist Alert" until we all became immune to it.
Where is the credibility of this administration?
Godspeed Arlen Specter!

"Please contact Sens. Dole and Burr immediately and ask that they vote against continuation of the Patriot Act."
I plan to write both senators and request that they support the patriot act.
As someone pointed out in another thread,if Bush DIDN'T use any and all means available to him to keep abreast of the 'iraqi freedom fighters' he should be impeached.
Can any of you liberals name some of the freedoms you have lost due to this act? None of the "slipery slope into fascism" or "we are headed the way of nazi germany" bs. Be specific.thanks in advance.

It would be so nice if issues were addressed and discussed rather than attacking people and groups. That only shows ignorance of politeness, responsibility, and maturity. ALL of us need to act our age more instead of acting the IQ number of our age!
