This is in response to the Homeless Point in Time survey.
I do not live in Greensboro, but I do want to thank you for your participation in informing the public when this survey was to occur and for following up with the results. I don't think the average citizen considers the homeless population a true problem.
Generally, many people (myself included) only think about the homeless when we see them standing on the street corner begging for money. And then our immediate thought is "get a job." Few of us consider how we can truly help the homeless long-term. Even fewer take action.
I think the media's coverage has opened the public's eyes a little more regarding the homeless and how we can make a difference in helping them help themselves. So, thank you again for your involvement in making the Homeless Point in Time survey so successful.

I, unfortunately, agree with you. Most citizens don't see homelessness as a problem. With all the furor around the Middle East turmoil, people can shout their venom and blame whom they want. The problem with homelessness is that for us to recognize it in our back yard might require us to do something about it. We love to shout about freedom, rights and "the bad other guy". We can shout moral enchantations about why the other guy is a sinner.
But with homeless, after we learn more about it, we might have to do something; we might have to get involved; we might have to take a turn volunteering at a local homeless shelter. That my friend is not volatile, it doesn't incite, no bombs get dropped so that we can condemn the other guy.
I've worked extensively in the field of homelessness and found it not to be glamorous, not always fun, and but sometimes fun. I have never felt so human and spiritual as when I have put some time in helping ameliorate the problems of the oppressed. Thanks for your letter.

An ode to Barney Fife has 10 comments as of today. A letter about homeless people in Greensboro has 1. What does this say, if anything, about people's priorities?

Yvonne,
You should know, if anyone knows, that most of the folks who comment on here---Hugh, Dan, NeoCON, MRP, think all the homeless are bums who don't want to work and aren't worthy of comment. Of course, they think George W. Bush is a genius too, so you get my point.
We should all be concerned about the growing homelessness in this country, and the reasons for its growth. Unfortunately, the leadership of our country is in the hands of folks who don't care about anything except THEIR taxes, THEIR gasoline, THEIR ideas and THEIR families.
