I'm perplexed by the likes of Jean Gordon and the League of Women Voters who wish to make our jails more comfortable for our local criminals. It would seem to me that the best deterrent for them returning would be the remembrance of what a horrible place it is to spend time.
They (the League of Women Voters) remind me of the Hollywood liberals who were so upset by the execution of the "Crips" leader who murdered four people in cold blood, Tookie Williams.
At worst, they preferred life in prison for Williams. It was pointed out in another article that the cost of life in prison for "Tookie" would pay for four-and-a-half underprivileged young people to attend Stanford University for four years.
Executing a person who has taken four lives, immediately, and using the money to educate four young people is a no-brainer.

Isn't Jail a proven non-deterrent?
But I agree - the whole process needs to be re-thought. Thank goodness I've not "served time" but my vision is of wasted days too much idle time - pumping iron and watching TV - with ugly nights for some - little being done to change attitudes or lifestyles.
I hope I'm really wrong.
... and as posted before, I'm REALLY against the death penalty because the truely guilty don't suffer enough.

The supposed goal of the American Penal System is to REHABILITATE! When that system fails to do that, then the offender has learned nothing that can help him/her become a contributing member of society. Until America learns this valuable lesson, our prisons will continue to be overcrowded...with repeat offenders.

Sigh...
Ok, the death penalty has been shown to be more expensive than life in prison due to the lengthy and expensive appeals process. That argument fails.
I really don't know about jail but I know that the death penalty has been shown to be a nondeterent as well.
And regarding Tookie, unless Mitch was there he cannot claim knowledge of whether Tookie was guilty of the crimes he was convicted or not.

How can anyone defend that man. He was a killer and that is fact. He also led other people to be killers, and that is also fact. You are right though, it does cost more to execute a person because of the endless appeals. But all that argument does is reinforce the idea that they are given too many chances to appeal. Only if there is actual new evidence or a display of gross negligence in the original trial should there be an appeal.

Bob,
From everything I've read, you are correct regarding the cost of the death penalty. But, in this case, Mitch Mitchell (sounds like a freakin weatherman) is also right because it saved the additional cost of keeping up Tookie. I'm not sure I buy into that whole cost comparison anyway. Wouldn't the appeals be done regardless in many cases?
Regardless, I don't believe in the death penalty for other reasons (moral and the lack of any real justice in this country)
Darryl, rehabilitation is a pipedream. It's living in fantasy world. It might work on kids that you get young enough. But once you're an adult, your values are firmly set and it is nearly impossible to change them. I'm not saying it won't work some of the time. I'm not saying it isn't worth trying. But no way is it a solution for most of these guys. Keeping them away from nonoffenders is often the only real solution. And it sucks.
Crypto, I hope it IS his opinion. That's the whole point of writing a lte, right? To voice your opinion?

Might I point out that if the DESIRE to rehabilitate is not there, it will never happen. The old saying applies: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." Many inmates will fit into your dream plan. Others just plain don't care.

Ask any inmate and see if they would prefer the "coddling" of prison to freedom. I don't think any would choose prison.
Agree with dog, I don't believe in the death penalty. It confuses me to listen to those who are against abortion but for the death penalty. I take "Thou Shall Not Kill" literally.
Don't know all the rights of convicted felons, but don't think the state has to pay for appeals of anyone but death row inmates. Anyone know for sure?

Carol,
You write: "It confuses me to listen to those who are against abortion but for the death penalty."
Many who listen to those who are against the death penalty yet for abortion are just as confused.

Carol & Yellowdog: While not a lawyer (and not even playing one on TV) - I'm pretty sure the expensive appeals process only applies to Death Penalty Inmates - "standard" prisoners get infrequent parole reviews.
... but it still costs a bunch to house them - although guards make barely over minimum wage (we can expect a lot from them, huh?) - and a large portion (maybe even a majority) are in for minor drug abuse - jail doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Maybe the statistics have changed in the past 10 years (last time I looked it up)
As for Tookie. I do find it interesting the folks that wanted Tookie FRIED for his Sins of the Past - are same folks that demand Redemption for Oli North. Just an observation.

JDR, the dichotomy of Tookie & Oli are extremely interesting are they not?

Just thought of something for Mitch. Commedian Ron White from Texas: "We are speeding up the execution process. If three witness saw you, you get no appeal. While other states are abolishing the death penalty, in Texas we're setting up an express lane." (JAJ)
