In response to Joe Stafford's letter (April 2), the recent vote by the Guilford County Board of Education to name our new middle school Northern Guilford Middle School is right on target.
Stafford failed to mention that there is tremendous support in the northern area of Guilford County to use the name of Northern for these new schools. The PTSAs of Northeast middle and high schools, Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary School and Northwest middle and high schools have all endorsed the use of the name Northern. The new high school has already been named Northern, and it makes sense to name the middle school likewise.
Stafford has repeatedly lobbied for a school to bear the name of Edward R. Murrow. While Murrow was a renowned broadcast journalist and was born here in Guilford County, he has not directly contributed to the educational process in our county.
If we are to use the name of a noteworthy person, that person should have made a significant contribution to our local school system that would be worthy of having a school named in his or her honor.
What is Stafford's hidden agenda for the naming of our schools?

There's hardly many folks worthy of walking in Murrow's shoes. It would do good for school kids to want to emulate his accomplishments.

Good man or not I don't think naming schools after individuals accomplishes anything nor does it contribute in any way to the education of our children. A person who is a hero to a group of people, may not compare to the other group of people who wish a school to be named after their hero.
I said on a previous thread about this, that if someone wishes a school to be named after a individual, then an organization established after that person needs to supply something to that school that will benifit the students. Building, supplies, computers etc. If not then there is no pressing need to name a school after a person.
IMO, name all schools with directional or neighborhood names, let the kids in those areas go to that school, and start eduacating our children, not manipulating them.

I hadn't quite realized how passionate folks were up there about having their school named "Northern." I'm guessing generic products sell well up there. Perhaps the mascot could be "Northerners." I'm thinking that the school colors could be white and off-white.

On the subject of Stafford's hidden agenda: my guess is that the guy's connected to big tobacco. Murrow smoked on the air, and I think this would subtly influence impressionable youths to light up. Either that, or Stafford is associated with the CIA or UN: between the two organizations, they have conspiracies and secret agenda pretty much covered. Or maybe he's with the Masons or the Elders of Zion. Endless possibilities, really.

They could use a more descriptive name like: Rich White Kid school.

yellowdog,
Can't call Northern, Rich White Kid School, as the News-Record has already reserved that name for Southwest. We can't have two schools that the powers-that-be have to devastate to achieve "diversity". The school board will just institute a busing plan to send the rich white kids to Dudley and Smith and a return favor from those schools to Northern. As Marti Sykes is famous for saying "Those kids need diversity".

Don't worry they'll bus in enough N.E. Greensboro kids to make the color a bit darker and add a bit of lower-incomes to balance things out.

Mr. Stafford's "agenda" cannot be described as "hidden" when he is on the same Project Committee as Gary Swing, a committee to recommend a name for the new middle school. Accusing Mr. Swing of having a hidden agenda would make equal sense, i.e., no sense whatsoever. Yes, Mr. Stafford has attempted to have other schools named after Edward R. Murrow, and, if the Guilford County School Board does not name this school after Murrow, Mr. Stafford will indeed try again, as is his right.
The Museum of Broadcasting Communications states, "Edward R. Murrow is the most distinguished and renowned figure in the history of American broadcast journalism."
By the way, Mr. Swing, in a letter to the Project Committee, signed his name as
"President, Northeast Guilford High School Athletic Booster Clug [sic]". A facsimile of his letter is posted on www.gcsnc.com. I kid you not!

For the uninitiated, Joe Stafford is a CPA by day, and a School Board groupie by night. He has no children currently in school, but he takes a great interest in our educational system. If the current crop of "victims" would enlist Joe into their cause, he would probably give more voice to their arguments. It is worth a try as the board does talk to him and they know WHO he is when he is in the room.
