High Pointers should just say no to Wal-Mart

So, here I am watching local news, and I hear a story about High Point. My ears perk up. High Point? I used to live there. Then I see what the story is about, and I get sick.

Wal-Mart is planning on building a superstore ... in High Point ... on Fairfield Road. I scream out loud and jump up. "Honey," I yell, "do you know where that is? That's right next to Kmart."

Loyal News & Record readers might remember me from a few years back; I'm the girl who used to work at that Kmart. Obviously, I don't anymore, but though I've moved on, I have to admit that store has a place in my heart. And as annoyed as I got at Kmart's policies, I will never hate them the way I hate Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is not the answer to better service or better treatment for staffers. And if you think Main Street is a pain to drive down now, just you wait.

So join me, please, in telling Wal-Mart no thanks. Archdale is full of good businesses that have become fixtures (including Kmart on Fairfield) and they need to be supported.

Ahh, the evils of capitalism.

I can't stand K-Marts. They are messy, poorly stocked, understaffed, and outdated.

Some Wal Marts however are cramped and messy, namely the one on Battleground.

lol I think walmart needs to go ahead and put the final nail in kmarts coffin. I'm happy that you have a special place in your heart for kmart but i find them to be useless, worthless and hopeless. And the attitude of their employees seems to be the same way. I remember reading in a story where a mexican immigrant said she didnt shop there because she never saw alot of cars in the kmart parking lot so it must not be very good. kmart needs to take the money they have and run.

Personally love the K=Mart on Bridford. Always clean, well stocked, and employees are great. Guess it is all in where you go. I avoid the Wal Mart on Wendover like a plague.

it must be, carol. we're talking about the same kmart and walmart. of course kmart is well stocked, people don't go in there that often. I dont avoid the wendover walmart, I'm in the thick of it like everyone else that shops there. I did almost buy a tv from kmart once, but then i found a bigger and better one for cheaper at walmart.

Wal-Mart has ruined me on customer service. I refuse to be treated in such an "it does not matter" attitude. I once telephoned the main number of the Wal-Mart on Wendover for over 30 minutes and never got an answer! That is customer service is it not?

While K-Mart may not be any/much better, I NEVER recall them putting local businesses out; or hurting the small business.

What amazes me is that the same people who speak in favor of Wal-Mart are the same ones who tout that the small business is what makes America great and creates jobs!

Is it "either/or" or "both/and?"

What's next, Burger King employees arguing against the expansion of McDonald's? Ford workers mobilizing against a new GM plant?

This is the dumbest letter I've read in some time. What is the point?

First, I've recently visited this K-mart recently. It is a dump. There is a reason they can't compete against Wal-Mart and it isn't because K-Mart is paying their employees big bucks and benefits.

I'll be honest and say I don't like shopping at either. I did go to Wal-Mart last night on Wendover and had a very pleasant experience with a super-friendly cashier named Pinkie.

Darryl, K-mart never took business away from a small business? Come on, that's exactly what they did in their hey day. Of course, that was around 30+ years ago so you may not remember it but it still happened.

K-Mart got complacent. They had the market all to themselves and let Wal-Mart come in and take them to town. They've got no one to blame but themselves.

Not that I don't have fond memories of K-Mart. Momma used to take us their on hot summer days for some free air-conditioning and (if we were good) we might even get a cherry Icee.

There is no question on K-Mart & complacency. However, I too remember when there was only one K-Mart in the HP area, that being on North Main St! I also remember when there was an Ames Dept Store (later Zayre's) and a Rose's Dept (that being on South Main St).

And there were many, many "local" type stores that did not have any worry from these. Each survived and prospered.

Please do not even hint that Wal-Mart has not put far too many "local" type businesses out! Doing this would only be in one's detriment.

Shalom

Darryl,

I would never say that Wal-Mart has not hurt some smaller, local businesses that could not compete. All I'm saying is that the Roses and Zayres and K-Marts also ran some local owned family businesses out. There used to be all those type businesses downtown that sold men's clothing, women's clothing, toys, hardware, etc.

Each had its own niche. People went to K-Mart cause they could get all those things in one place at a lesser price without having to go downtown.

Same principle as Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has just perfected the concept.

yd, has Wal-Mart perfected or perverted the concept?

I prefer the latter. It better explains what has transpired.

Shalom
